The Canon Pixma MP990 lacks a fax and really isn't designed for office work. Rather, it's a printer/scanner/copier for those who take and print lots of photos. It can scan and copy 35 mm film and slides with an included adapter. The Canon Pixma MP990 also has a 3.8-inch LCD screen for previewing and editing photos, a straight paper path option for heavier stock (like photo paper), and can print on CDs and DVDs. Furthermore, reviewers say it prints black-and-white photos especially well because there's a light gray and two kinds of black among the six ink cartridges. Although there's wired and wireless connectivity, reviewers say you can't have both running simultaneously. Text printing isn't the Pixma MP990's strong suit, however, and speeds can be slow.

So far, only PC World (Australia) has looked at the Pixma MP990. Since the new model is quite similar, though, in-depth reviews of the Pixma MP980 from trusted sources such as PCMag.com and Imaging-Resource.com still have value. Amazon.com users weighing in on this model are mostly pleased.

Our Sources

1. PC World (Australia)

James Hutchinson at PC World (Australia) says the Canon Pixma MP990 compares quite favorably to the older Pixma MP980 -- print times are improved, though photo output is slower. A handy chart comparing results from various printer models illustrates this well. Print quality remains "fantastic overall," though Hutchinson feels the improvements aren't enough to justify replacing a Pixma MP980 with a Pixma MP990 if you already have the previous version.

2. PCMag.com

PCMag.com says the Canon Pixma MP980 (predecessor of the Canon Pixma MP990) earns an Editors' Choice rating because of its exceptional photo prints and its ability to scan and print from slides and negatives. Writer M. David Stone says network installation is "clumsy" though, and you need to choose between wireless and wired hookup -- you can't do both. Text printing is merely adequate.

3. Imaging-Resource.com

In a review geared to photographers, Mike Pasini gives the older Canon Pixma MP980 "outright prolonged applause" overall, praising it as a photo printer. "More remarkable," says Pasini, "was the excellent quality of the film scans, far better than anything we've seen in a multifunction device or even an inexpensive flatbed scanner."
