Reviews say Canon's Pixma MX850 is the best multifunction inkjet printer at its price, offering the best combination of speed and print quality, plus copying, scanning and faxing. The Canon Pixma MX850 has been replaced by the Canon Pixma MX860 (*Est. $200), but testers aren't as enthusiastic about the new model. Business users should note that the Canon Pixma MX850 has a relatively low-capacity automatic document feeder (35 pages) and slow duplex printing. Several reviewers and owners have a hard time setting up the Pixma MX850 for networking. Some reviews note some paper curls and banding and that the color isn't perfect on scans and prints. If photo printing is more important to you than printing documents, the Canon Pixma MP980 (*Est. $280) gets the best reviews at its price, but there's no fax. Another caveat is that the Canon Pixma MX850 is heavy (30 pounds).
Several computer magazines test the Canon Pixma MX850 in depth. PCMag.com's review is the best of these, and the printer gets an overall rating that can be used to compare it with other tested printers. A review in Macworld is also based on hands-on tests, but the magazine hasn't tested as many multifunction printers as PCMag.com. We also found a very detailed review at PrinterInfo.com. Owner reviews at Amazon.com complete the picture.

PCMag.com thoroughly tests most major printers and gives the Canon Pixma MX850 an Editors' Choice award, despite a tendency to curl paper when printing full-page graphics. Reviewer M. David Stone says that the Pixma MX850 is fast, prints photos well and offers duplex printing and network connections.

Macworld publishes results of its various tests and assigns an overall score that makes comparisons relatively simple. Reviewer Brian Chen calls the Canon Pixma MX850 a "superb choice" despite some criticism of the scanner and of color reproduction on scanned material.

PrinterInfo.com does extremely thorough, credible reviews that are lacking only in their failure to rate or rank printers against each other. Binde Rai's opinion is that the Canon Pixma MX850 is overpriced, with some banding on prints and "rather weak black and white prints."

While not a go-to source for printer reviews, IT Reviews is highly credible and tests what it reviews. It likes just about everything about the Canon Pixma MX850 except for the "slow" duplex printing that it attributes to slow-drying ink.

5. Amazon.com
More than 160 owner reviews combine to give a very high rating to the Canon Pixma MX850. There are some varied complaints about the ink cartridges, with several noting that when one ink is out, you can't go ahead and print without it.
