While professional reviews for the HP Officejet Pro L7780 and HP Officejet Pro L7680 (*Est. $250) are excellent, many owner reviews are much harsher. The two are the same product, except the L7780 has a 350-page paper tray in addition to the primary 250-page tray. Professional reviews are more plentiful for the cheaper of the two. But essentially they say they're good as printers, faxes, copiers and scanners. Many owner reviews for both sharply criticize the software and setup as well as the tech-support problems when they attempted to resolve those issues.

Our report on the HP Officejet Pro L7680 has more (and better) professional reviews. CNET has a review for the HP Officejet Pro L7780, but it actually tested the HP Officejet Pro L7680. Both models get some harsh owner reviews at CNET, Amazon.com and Newegg.com. Coverage from BusinessWeek and SmallBizTrends.com is OK but not really scientific in testing.

Our Sources

1. CNET

CNET gives the HP Officejet Pro L7780 an Editors' Choice designation, but the assessment loses a little credibility because CNET actually tests the HP Officejet Pro L7680 instead of trying both. More than 100 owner reviews here combine to give the L7780 a low score, with many reporting trouble with the software and wireless connection.

2. Amazon.com

More than 130 owner reviews here are about equally divided among those who like the HP Officejet Pro L7780 and those who don't. The negative reviews indicate setup problems, paper jams, compatibility issues, ink-cartridge glitches and non-supportive tech support.

3. NewEgg.com

There are more than 40 owner reviews here for the HP Officejet Pro L7780, with about half scoring it a four or the maximum five. The most common complaints are dicey setup, difficulty achieving a wireless connection and tech support that isn't very helpful.

4. Business Week

BusinessWeek doesn't rate a lot of printers, but this is a decent little review that says the HP Officejet Pro L7780 works well when it works. The test unit had to be returned after a few weeks because of a faulty sensor.

Review: HP's Officejet L7780 All-in-One Printer, Cliff Edwards, Aug. 24, 2007

5. SmallBizTrends.com

This review is long and offers a lot of photos, but testing methods don't seem any more advanced than the average user's. The gist is that the HP Officejet L7780 is a "bargain."
