According to the National Institutes of Health, seniors gradually lose the ability to absorb vitamin B12 from food as they age. As a result, health experts recommend that multivitamins for seniors contain at least 25 mcg of B12 and little or no iron. Kirkland Signature Mature Adults 50+ Multi lacks iron and contains 25 mcg of vitamin B12, along with 500 IU of vitamin D, 220 mg of calcium and 2,500 IU of vitamin A, 40 percent as beta-carotene.
ConsumerLab.com approves the Mature Adults 50+ Multi, and it's labeled a Smart Pick by ConsumerReports.org. Editors like that the formula is inexpensive and doesn't contain megadoses of some vitamins, because experts say there's no reason to take more than the RDA unless instructed by your doctor. The multi contains 30 mcg of vitamin K, which can interfere with blood-thinning medications, so talk to your doctor before you start a multivitamin regimen.
Kirkland Signature is Costco's store brand, but nonmembers can buy the multi at other outlets such as Amazon.com and Smart & Final. Centrum Silver Adults 50+ (*Est. $9 for 100 tablets) is more expensive, but it's easier to find and is approved in two recent independent tests.
ConsumerLab.com offers the best information on the Kirkland Signature Mature Adults 50+ Multi. The full report is available to subscribers only, but the small fee may be well worth it if you buy a lot of supplements. ConsumerReports.org also reviews the multivitamin in a recent lab test.
