If you can't afford to spend much, the Asus Eee PC 1001PX-MU27 offers typical netbook performance without breaking the bank. This 10.1-inch netbook is a newer version of the widely reviewed Asus Eee PC 1001P, which received Editors' Choice awards from Laptop Magazine and AnandTech.com when it first debuted. Experts appreciate the solid build quality and stylish exterior. The textured design, which mimics carbon fiber, resists fingerprints and smudges better than glossy plastic, so most say the Asus Eee PC 1001P doesn't look like a budget netbook. Reviewers also love the matte display, as it doesn't have the glare and reflections that plague most netbooks with glossy screen coatings. Battery life is very good, lasting more than eight hours in one test. The Asus Eee PC 1001PX-MU27 has an Intel Atom N450 processor, 1 GB of memory and 160 GB hard drive. For even less, the Asus Eee PC 1001PX-EU2X (*Est. $250 and up) comes with Windows XP Home and a three-cell battery. Battery life won't be as good on this model, but you'll save a little money with careful shopping, as some retailers offer it for as low as $250. If you have a little more to spend, the Asus Eee PC 1015PEM (*Est. $250) has Intel's new dual-core processor and eight hours of battery life.
Since the Asus Eee PC 1001PX-MU27 is so similar to the Asus Eee PC 1001P, reviews for the Asus Eee PC 1001P are applicable to both models. The best reviews of the Asus Eee PC 1001P come from AnandTech.com and Laptop Magazine. Both sites conduct extensive netbook testing and benchmark results are thoroughly explained. Solid reviews are also available at ComputerShopper.com, PCMag.com and CNET. Liliputing.com doesn't rate the netbooks it reviews, but its analysis is still worth checking out. There is a small selection of reviews for the 1001PX at Amazon.com.
