Netbook Reviews
by Editors of Laptop Magazine
Our Assessment

Laptop Magazine is the best source for up-to-date netbook reviews and advice. Experts test dozens of the latest netbooks from both major and minor brands, and they put the results into context. Each netbook gets a rating, and the very best receive an Editors' Choice designation. Of these, Toshiba's first U.S. netbook (the Toshiba mini NB205) impresses editors the most, with its "stunning design, stellar keyboard and the longest battery life of any netbook to date."

Laptops and Notebooks
by Editors of PCMag.com
Our Assessment PCMag.com doesn't corral its netbook advice and reviews into one neat package like Laptop Magazine does. However, editors test several new netbooks every month in this laptop-and-notebook review section. Tests are expertly done. As it does at Laptop Magazine, the Toshiba mini NB205 nabs an Editors' Choice award.

Best Netbooks
by Dan Ackerman
Our Assessment CNET tests netbooks on a regular basis, including head-to-head speed and battery-drain tests. Each netbook gets a rating, but most earn remarkably similar scores. The best ones end up on this list, but CNET singles out one -- the Asus Eee PC 1005HA -- as its Editors' Choice award-winner thanks to its class-leading battery life and under-$400 price.

Top 10 Netbooks
by Darren Gladstone
Our Assessment PC World reviews netbooks in single-product reviews with the top 10 making it to this listing. Links lead to full reviews that are testing based and reasonably detailed, though some others we've seen provide more information still. The Toshiba mini NB205 jumps to the head of the pack and earns a Best Buy designation.

Top 10 Netbooks
by Editors of NotebookCheck.net
Our Assessment

These reviews are among the most detailed available, though the information presented might be overkill for some. Additionally, reports are translated from the site's native German, making them a challenge to read. Testing is comprehensive and well documented. Mini laptops are not formally compared but do receive a rating, and the 10 best make it to this list. Not all netbooks are available in the U.S. The Asus Eee PC 1002HA moves to the top of the list by including "everything a [contemporary] netbook needs."

Laptop Reviews
by Editors of NotebookReview.com
Our Assessment

NotebookReview.com is a good source for reviews of mini laptops, netbooks and ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs). Reports are well balanced and packed with results of practical testing. However, while pros and cons are listed, and occasional Editor's Choice selections are made, mini laptops are not otherwise rated or ranked. Additionally, they appear in this listing alongside all other types of laptops as well as reviews from other sites on the Internet. The affordable Asus Eee PC 1000HE and the rugged Dell Latitude 2100 earn Editor's Choice awards.

Netbook Reviews
by Editors of TrustedReviews.com
Our Assessment

England's TrustedReviews.com rates a good assortment of netbooks in reviews that are reasonably -- though not extensively -- detailed and backed by solid testing. The very best get either an Editor's Choice or Recommended award. Among these, the Samsung N110 and Asus Eee PC 1008HA are both current and available in the United States. The Toshiba NB200-10Z -- the U.K. version of the highly regarded Toshiba mini NB205 -- is also highly recommended.

Notebooks and Accessories
by Editors of Wired
Our Assessment Wired's netbook reports are relatively brief and irreverent, but they are backed by testing. Though the listing contains some now discontinued netbooks, the Dell Latitude 2100 and Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 are both current and highly rated.
9. ConsumerReports.org
As of Oct. 2009
Netbooks
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our Assessment ConsumerReports.org has improved its netbook rankings in recent months. Editors have added a lot more current models -- 24 in all. They rate each one on its speakers, display, ergonomics, portability, versatility and performance, and then they rank the netbooks from best to worst. However, the brief write-ups on each model are still woefully thin.

Laptop Reviews
by Editors of Bit-tech.net
Our Assessment

Reports here are thorough, highly detailed and editors have no qualms about giving bad scores to netbooks they don't like. They rate each netbook on a scale of one to 10 for its build quality, features, ease of use, performance, value and overall. However, there's no way to see these ratings unless you read each review. Bit-tech.net has reviewed only a few netbooks recently, and a couple get identically high ratings, but editors praise the Samsung NC20 the most.

Best Netbook Laptops
by Mark Kyrnin
Our Assessment

About.com's Mark Kyrnin says that because most netbooks share the same basic configuration, what sets them apart are features that make one or another more suitable for certain tasks. No benchmark performance testing seems to have been done, but features and usability are tackled in reasonable depth, and comments seem in line with what other experts say. Most netbooks qualify for this list by excelling in a specific way -- such as offering the best screen, best keyboard or longest battery life. In terms of general recommendations, the Dell Mini 10v is identified as offering the best overall value, while the HP Mini 5101 is the best for business travelers. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

Reviews
by Eric Grevstad
Our Assessment

While there are not a lot of netbook reviews here, HardwareCentral.com is still a worthwhile destination as what's available is worth a read. Eric Grevstad nicely balances appropriate discussions of features and ergonomics with solid performance testing. Ratings are given for features, performance and value, and those can be compared to similar mini laptops, but no overall best selection is named. Still, best praise seems to be reserved for the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, which Grevstad calls "the nicest of the netbook lot."

Netbooks
by Contributors to Newegg.com
Our Assessment Newegg.com is an Internet seller of technology products, including netbooks. User reviews can vary in quality, but most of the reviewers have a higher-than-normal level of technical expertise, making their viewpoints particularly valuable for this type of product. No other current netbook is as highly regarded as the Asus Eee PC 1005HA.

4 'Large' Netbooks -- Are They Better or Just Bigger?
by Brian Nadel
Our Assessment This review tests four plus-size netbooks with screens from 11.6 to 13.3 inches. Reviewer Brian Nadel tests their performance and endurance, battery life and Wi-Fi signals, and he compares their features. He likes the smallest one, the Acer Aspire One 751h, best. The three bigger netbooks -- the Lenovo IdeaPad S12, MSI X340 and Samsung NC20 -- "are oversized and overpriced," he concludes.

UMPC and Netbook Reviews
by Editors of MobileTechReview.com
Our Assessment

Editors at MobileTechReview.com maintain an archive of highly detailed notebook reviews, each of which include a number of photos and the results of a battery of benchmark tests. One particularly nice feature of the reviews here is that they compare each model's test results to those of similar laptops, which enables readers to see at a glance how they measure up. The listing is sorted alphabetically, not chronologically, and contains lots of discontinued models, which makes spotting current mini laptops a little harder than it needs to be. The Toshiba mini NB205 earns the highest rating of 4.5 stars (out of five).

Our Assessment Amazon.com contains no shortage of owner-written reviews for various netbooks. Navigation is easy because netbooks get their own category, and each netbook's rating and the number of reviews is listed right on the main page.

When Laptops Go Light
by David Pogue
Our Assessment David Pogue picks the brain of Laptop Magazine's Joanna Stern to find the four best mini laptops. All ask for compromises from their owners, Pogue says, but each has particular strengths. In addition, most of the compromises aren't terrible as long as the limitations and best uses that go hand-in-hand with mini laptops in general are respected.

Personal Technology
by Walter S. Mossberg
Our Assessment Walter Mossberg tackles several netbooks in his recent Personal Technology columns for The Wall Street Journal. Some don't make the grade, including the slim Sony Vaio P and the subsidized netbooks that come with Verizon mobile service, but he does like the Toshiba mini NB205.

Client Device Reviews
by Editors of Wi-FiPlanet.com
Our Assessment

Wi-FiPlanet.com reviews computers and their accessories from a Wi-Fi point of view. Editors test a few netbooks and call the Asus Eee PC 1000HE "the best of the latest crop of netbooks," partly because it includes the latest Wireless-N capability (a lot of netbooks use older Wireless-G technology to save money). The most valuable article here is one titled "Netbook Wi-Fi -- 802.11g or 802.11n?" which explains why Wireless-N would be important on a netbook, which current models have it -- and which don't.

20. BestBuy.com
As of Oct. 2009
Netbooks
by Contributors to BestBuy.com
Our Assessment BestBuy.com doesn't have quite as many user reviews as Newegg.com or Amazon.com, but a few netbooks have managed to attract an impressive following. For example, the Asus Eee PC 1005HA earns an average of 4.5 stars (out of five) in nearly 70 reviews. The MSI Wind U100-641US and HP Mini 110-1025DX score just as well, with more than 30 reviews each.
21. Which? magazine
As of Oct. 2009
Netbook Reviews
by Editors of Which? magazine
Our Assessment Which? magazine is a U.K. publication similar to ConsumerReports.org. Experts there test 26 netbooks, rating each on nine criteria (such as ease of use and overall performance). Each one also gets an individual writeup that provides a good overview of the netbook. Editors name six Best Buys, but some are last-generation or U.K.-only models.

Laptop and Notebook Reviews
by Editors of DigitalTrends.com
Our Assessment

DigitalTrends.com lists tons of netbooks though only a few are actually reviewed. The site also makes finding reviews a bit difficult as most are sorted by the processor used (in the case of netbooks most -- but not all -- use the Intel Atom). The reviews themselves are generally unremarkable, but are testing based and reasonably critical. Only the MSI Wind U100 rates well enough to earn Editors' Choice consideration, but the configuration tested in that older review is no longer offered. Among recent reviews, the Asus Eee PC 1000HE and MSI Wind U123-003US score highest.

Reviews
by Editors of Notebooks.com
Our Assessment Notebooks.com offers a small handful of netbook reviews. Reports in many -- though not all -- cases are clearly based on extensive hands-on testing, but writeups seem to emphasize positives and downplay negatives. Among current laptops, the Dell Mini 10v earns the most praise.
24. Walmart.com
As of Oct.2009
Netbooks
by Contributors to Walmart.com
Our Assessment

While Walmart.com might not be the first destination many think of for computers, the store's website lists a fairly good selection of netbooks, though most don't get a ton of reviews. One exception is the Acer Aspire One D150, which earns an average of 4.5 stars (out of five) in about 120 reviews. The Acer Aspire One D250 has just a little less feedback to date, but various versions score similarly. However, Walmart.com is a little harder to navigate than other user review sites and review quality is even more variable.

Netbook Reviews
by Editors of InfoSyncWorld.com
Our Assessment

InfoSyncWorld.com hasn't done the best job covering netbooks lately and site navigation remains a challenge as clicking though to many of the reviews leads to only press release-based material or a brief report based on an evaluation at a trade show. One exception is the HP Mini 1151NR, which is being sold at a discount by Verizon with a two-year commitment. That review is reasonably detailed and well done, but the netbook doesn't exactly earn raves.
