Did a lot of research, wish I had tried it first., October 30, 2009

I did a lot of reading of reviews and ratings on Amazon, Google and other sites. Wish that I had tried it out first, though. The seat does not have enough cushioning, which makes me sore to sit in it for more than an hour. The seat also tilts down a bit so there is a slight feeling of your trousers pulling up. The back also does not not lock into place. The arms are cheap and make a lot of noise. I can see where they did try to design this well, but it is not worth the money.

Terrible!, August 22, 2009

This chair looks really neat, but it is terrible. The company boasts that there are only 5 adjustments on the chair making it simple to tailor to a person. However, because there are so few adjustments, one is forced to accept a forever semi-reclined position. There is zero upper back support unless you are leaning very far back in the chair. It is a lousy, lousy design. There is no way to adjust the tension, no way to adjust the preferred seating angle, no way to adjust the amount of lumbar support. I can't imagine people give this chair any stars. There is only one word for this chair, terrible! Can I have my money back?

Best desk chair I have ever tried/owned, July 17, 2008

"upgraded" from an aeron chair (actually handed it down to my wife) as I work from home and am sitting in a chair for many hours straight. I tried many, many different chairs from specialty stores at all different price ranges and spent about 4 weeks of trial and error before deciding to get this one. I am 5'9", 185 pounds and sorta muscular build. Some things I have noticed: 1. Chairs are very personal items. This chair seems to be designed to fit average sized people. 2. I first tried the regular seat for a couple of days before deciding to upgrade to the gel seat. But I think this is a personal choice issue. Some people like the gel and some dont. I much prefer the gel. 3. I found that I had to go with all of the upgrades to get the most out of the chair such as the advanced arms. 4. Even after all of the research it still took me about a full day to get used to the differences of this chair. Wouldnt give it up if you paid me double for it:) 5. Headrest is a MUST have. Also...after 3 years of owning this chair one of the functions of the arm rests stopped working properly. I called humanscale and they were EXTREMELY responsive to my issue and are sending a replacement are right out. Nice to have a lifetime warranty.

Avoid..., July 7, 2008

Our company just bought these chairs for everybody. I have been sitting in it for less than a day and I hate it already. I would rather have my old chair back (that cost 1/10 of the price of this one). Here's what's wrong with it: 1. When you lean back the head/neck rest stays in it's upright position, so your head gets forced forward when you lean back. 2. Even with the seat in the upright position the head rest sticks out too far so your head will still be forced forward. I fear I will be walking around with a permenantly crooked neck after a few days of using this chair. 3. You can't adjust the tension required to lean the seat back. The chair is supposed to be smart and adjust it for you... ? In my case it leans back too easy and if I try to sit normally the chair simply reclines, the head rest breaking my neck in the process. The chair itself is well built I think (we'll see if it holds up) but it's about as comfortable as an iron maiden...

Amazing chair!, January 4, 2008

I have owned this chair for over a year now. I purchased it when I was doing web site design from home, and would be sitting for long periods of time. I was having severe back pain prior to this purchase. This chair has made all the difference in being able to be productive for long periods of time. It is very comfortable, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has to sit and work from behind a desk, doing computer work, for long periods of time.

Our Sources

1. The Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal tests five office chairs, including the Humanscale Freedom. The review says the Humanscale Freedom looks good and balances weight evenly, but has uncomfortable armrests. The review notes that testers got grease all over their hands from the casters, too.

2. PopularMechanics.com

This article gives recommendations for ergonomic office equipment of all types, including chairs. In this review, Allbritton says that the Humanscale Freedom's automatic adjustment is "like having a second spine."

3. CNNMoney.com

Andrew Tilin reviews three high-end office chairs, but doesn't rank them. The Humanscale Freedom is very comfortable if you are sitting upright, he says, but reclining "is an acquired skill."

4. OfficeChairAdvice.com

The Humanscale Freedom gets a perfect five stars, but there are so many five-star ratings at this site that it's hard to determine which office chairs really stand out. Still, there is a lot of helpful information here.

5. Amazon.com

We found about a dozen owner reviews of the Humanscale Freedom office chair, and users either loved it or hated it. Those who don't like it say it's uncomfortable, and one said it caused sweating.
