In April 2009, Philips recalled about 155,000 one-cup coffee makers, including the Senseo HD7810, in cooperation with the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). The company is still trying to meet the demand for replacement units, so this product is not currently available. Owners can see if their coffee maker is affected by calling the toll-free Philips consumer care number at (866) 604-0051. For more information about the recall, check the CPSC website at www.cpsc.gov or the Philips' website at www.usa.philips.com.

This model has now been updated and re-released as the Senseo SL7810 (*Est. $70), and the brand has changed hands from Philips to Sara Lee.

We found the best ratings for the Senseo HD7810 in one professional review, which puts seven pod coffee makers through rigorous testing. ConsumerGuide.com also has detailed reviews of several pod coffee makers, and CoffeeReview.com compares 11 one-cup coffee makers in an older review. The New York Times compares the Senseo HD7810 to two other budget-priced pod machines and some more expensive models. We also consult various other websites, some coffee experts and some not, that give their opinions about the HD7810. Due to the recall, we couldn't find many owner-written reviews of this product at online retailers.

Our Sources

1. ConsumerReports.org

ConsumerReports.org compares the Senseo HD7810 and six other models of pod coffee makers. Models are evaluated on seven criteria: convenience, brewing range, first-cup speed, repeat speed, temperature consistency, size consistency and noise. Two models tie for the highest overall score, which is based on convenience, brewing finesse and selection of compatible coffee. Several models receive noticeably low overall ratings.

2. ConsumerGuide.com

ConsumerGuide.com posts lengthy reviews of the Senseo HD7810 and Keurig Elite B40, but we don't know how many cups of coffee were made and not much information is provided about the quality of the brewed coffee. The coffee makers are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 is the highest) in five categories: value, performance, ease of use, features and overall. The Keurig Elite B40 receives a perfect score overall and is named a Best Buy. The Senseo SL7832 receives a lower overall rating of 4.

3. CoffeeReview.com

In this roundup, the Senseo HD7810 is named a runner-up for "its low price, simplicity of operation, sturdy construction." A convenient ratings chart shows how many cups of coffee were tested for each machine and the overall score.

4. The New York Times

William Grimes discusses three budget-priced pod machines, pointing out that taste is determined less by the machine and more by the coffee. The Senseo HD7810 took 90 seconds to make a 150-degree cup of coffee, and "the 'mild roast' from Douwe Egberts was insipid," he says.

5. Attention Deficit

In this casual comparison, Tony Martinez says he prefers the Keurig Special Edition B60 to the less sturdy Senseo HD7810, which required more clean up.

6. The Nibble

Editors say the Senseo HD7810 is "not a coffee connoisseur's machine," due to its limited coffee offerings. Still, they like this machine's compact size, and say its convenient coffee pods prevent messy clean up. A favorite feature: the coffee passes through a frothing chamber so a layer of crema forms on top of the brewed coffee.

7. Epinions.com

Epinions.com is a good place to see whether owners are happy with their one-cup coffee makers and to learn about a product's long-term durability. Almost 200 owners have posted reviews for the Senseo HD7810, which receives an average rating of 4 stars out of 5. Most consumers are very pleased with the convenience and value these machines offer, but a few people complain that the coffee quality is poor.

8. Good Housekeeping

Based on blind taste tests, Good Housekeeping editors choose the Senseo HD7810 as the best overall one-cup coffee maker, praising its great-tasting coffee, simple operation and two-cup option. At least three other models are tested (because they name winners in three other categories), but we wish this source provided more detail about the testing methodology used.

9. MSNBC

Gary Krakow says he's "tried a bunch of the new, single-serve coffee makers that claim their coffee pods make great coffee," but he only likes the Senseo HD7810. He says the machine is beautifully designed, but wishes the water reservoir had a larger capacity. We give this older review a lower ranking because we don't know what other models were tested or whether they were tested in a side-by-side comparison.

10. SingleServeCoffee.com

Reviewer Jay Brewer evaluates the Senseo HD87810 shortly after it emerges in the marketplace in 2004. He says the Senseo HD7810 produces coffee that's silkier and richer in texture than coffee from other pod-style machines.
