IBackup

*Est. $10 per month and up
Email

Pros
  • Faster than most
  • File sharing
  • Good for small businesses
  • Compatible with PCs and Macs
Cons
  • Can get expensive
  • Harder to use than some services

IBackup isn't the least expensive choice for backup online storage of your computer files, but unlike budget services, IBackup offers file sharing. If multiple users need access to the same files, reviewers say IBackup is your best choice. Business users will also be able to back up data on Exchange and SQL servers, and reviewers say IBackup has faster uploads than similar services, although no online backup service gets lavish praise for speed. Reviewers say you'll need a bit more tech savvy to use IBackup than to operate bare-bones storage services like MozyHome (*est. free for 2 GB, *est. $5 for unlimited). There is, of course, an encryption device -- most services have one -- and there are separate versions of IBackup for PCs and Macs.

Most reviews of IBackup are older, with Information Week the most recent (April 2007). A ratings chart at TopTenReviews.com says 2008, but that website often slaps a new year on existing reviews, and the testing seems better at Information Week and ComputerPowerUser.com (including a speed test), anyway. WebUser magazine doesn't describe testing and its ratings lack some context. Like many sources, once you get five stars, you keep them, even if better products come along later.

1. Information Week

Mozy wins this competition with AT&T Online Vault, Carbonite, eSureIT and IBackup. Reviewer Serdar Yegulalp says IBackup requires a bit more tech savvy than Mozy, and Mozy is less expensive.

2. Computer Power User

Six online backup services are rated after hands-on testing in this older report. All are rated above average, but IBackup is ranked first because of its speed, features and software. Mozy is not included among the six.

3. WebUser.com

The U.K.'s Web User doesn't reveal testing methods, and ratings are from the time of the review, not compared with products tested since. IBackup gets the maximum five stars, but that was in 2006, and Mozy's paid service was described as getting "first place in our list" in 2007.

4. TopTenReviews.com

TopTenReviews.com usually ranks low in our ratings because it often just slaps a new year on an old ratings chart without noting changes in the products. But it's not as mercenary as some websites, and the features-comparison chart (IBackup ranks fifth) is useful.
