The Alera Technologies 240130 DVD/CD Shredder Plus Disc Shredder, with its carbon steel blades, shreds DVDs, CDs and credit cards into small pieces. (Some DVD/CD disc shredders do not cut up discs but rather mar the surface of discs to destroy data.) The Alera Technologies 240130 can shred about 50 discs in two minutes. This unit also shreds paper -- up to five folded sheets at one time. The paper must be folded because of the small feed slot, which some owners find tedious. It does not shred floppy disks. Some reviewers complain that the wastebasket, which has a capacity of just under one gallon, is too small for large amounts of paper shredding. If you want a shredder that can easily handle large amounts of paper as well as DVDs, CDs and credit cards, the Fellowes Powershred SB-97Cs (*est. $180) gets strong reviews. Among paper-only shredders, the best-reviewed model we found is the Fellowes Powershred DS-1 (*est. $110).

The Alera Technologies 240130 DVD/CD Shredder Plus Disc Shredder has only five reviews at Amazon.com, but almost everyone strongly praises this unit's ability to shred DVDs and CDs. Its ability to shred paper, however, is limited; it can take about five sheets at a time, and the sheets must be folded to fit into the slot sized for DVDs and CDs.
