Fellowes Powershred DS1

Pros
  • Fast
  • Large collection bin
  • Easy to empty
  • Automatic safety shutoff
  • Handles paper clips and staples
  • Attractive design
Cons
  • Basket gets dusty
  • Noisy operation
  • Reliability concerns re: breakdowns

The Fellowes Powershred DS-1 does well in each of the professional reviews we found due to its speed, power and design. The DS-1 is a cross-cut shredder, meaning it slices papers two ways for added security. It comes with a 4.75-gallon mesh basket that opens with a step lever -- one of its best features, according to reviews. It's rated for 11 sheets at a time, but users say five is more realistic. On the downside, we found a lot of complaints about jams, and especially noise. A better bet in this price range is the Fellowes Intellishred PS-79Ci (*Est. $200), which includes a two-year warranty and a jam-free guarantee that reviewers say really does hold water.

We found consensus in both tests and user reviews that the Powershred DS-1 is a great machine for the money but does have some shortfalls. Hundreds of user comments attest to the model's popularity, and user comments reflect expert testers' reviews.
