We found consensus in both tests and user reviews that the Powershred DS-1 is a great machine for the money. Hundreds of user comments attest to the model's popularity, and user comments reflect expert testers' reviews.

The Fellowes Powershred DS1 does well in each of the professional reviews we found due to its speed, power and design. The DS1 is a crosscut shredder, meaning it slices papers two ways for added security. It comes with a 4.75-gallon mesh basket that opens with a step lever -- one of its best features, according to reviews. It's rated for 11 sheets at a time, but users say five is more realistic. They like its speed -- it eats a page in three seconds -- and say it stands up to everyday home use (as many as 220 pages a day). If you're in the market for something more powerful, the Fellowes Powershred SB-97Cs (*est. $180) is rated for 1,700 pages a day and can handle more than 10 pages per pass. Yet another model from this company, the Fellowes Powershred P-57Cs (*est. $60), is an option for light duty. It performed better than other inexpensive shredders in reviews and also features a safety sensor.
