Bottom line

While the Landmann 28335 Big Sky Stars & Moons Fire Pit is a slightly smaller fire pit than the top-rated Red Ember Bronze Crossweave Firebowl Fire Pit (Est. $150 and up) , it certainly compensates with accessories. The Landmann 28335 comes with a spark screen, grill rack and poker. Plus, the fire pit's design features an extended rail, which improves safety and helps when emptying the basin.

Performance

Decent capacity. As the name suggests, the Big Sky Stars & Moons Fire Pit has moon- and star-shaped cutouts that reveal the flames, a feature that owners love. Although the Landmann 28335 is not as large as the Red Ember Bronze Crossweave Firebowl Fire Pit (Est. $150 and up) , owners say it is still deep enough to get a good blaze going that, in the words of one Amazon.com reviewer, "lasts for hours." Most owners seem to use it more for entertainment than for warmth, but those who mention its heat output call it toasty.

Ease of use

Useful features. Owners generally find the Landmann 28335 fire pit fairly easy to assemble. However, a few users complain that the protective metal guardrail does not fit together snugly and must be wrestled into place. The finished rail is a useful feature: partly for safety and partly for use as a handle when emptying the ashes. Owners also appreciate the included spark screen, grill rack and poker. Still, since it is essentially a bowl of fire, the Landmann 28335 does become very hot. Owners warn against setting it up on a wooden surface or near vinyl siding. Also, like any wood-burning fire pit, there is some work involved in building the fire.

Ownership

Fairly sturdy, but finish wears off. In general, owners describe the Landmann 28335 as sturdy once assembled. However, we did see many complaints that the "Georgia Clay" finish wears off quickly and the exposed areas develop rust. Owners recommend various ways to address this problem, such as filling the bottom with sand, drilling holes for drainage, adding a coat of heat-resistant paint or covering the pit between uses with the optional protective cover (Est. $25). The black-colored unit appears to receive fewer complaints concerning rust and wear than the clay-colored version. If it does wear out, however, don't expect help from the manufacturer: The warranty on this fire pit only lasts 90 days.
