Best 5 PDAs
by Bonnie Cha and Editors of CNet.com
Our Assessment

This list of top five PDAs is current, but the original reviews for each PDA were done three to five years ago. Each review includes each unit's drawbacks as well as its selling points, and models are compared and contrasted in ratings. The Palm TX remains the highest-rated PDA, with a Wi-Fi connection that's quick and easy to set up and a 320-by-480-pixel screen that's "gorgeous." The Palm Tungsten E2 comes in a close second. The E2 does not rank as highly because it lacks Wi-Fi capability and a voice recorder, and it becomes sluggish if multiple applications are running at once. Still, it's a good choice for PDA users with more basic needs. HP's iPAQ hx2750 and rx5900/5915 Travel Companion with GPS, along with the Pharos Traveler GPS 525, round out the top five picks.

PDA Reviews
by Sascha Segan and Editors
Our Assessment

PC Magazine hasn't done a PDA roundup in a while, and the bulk of their coverage has shifted to smartphones, but its single-product PDA reviews are excellent and include comparisons to competing PDAs. Although the Palm TX and Palm Z22 were reviewed several years ago, both remain top picks. The newest high-end PDA, the HP iPAQ 210/211 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, receives the same high rating for its bright screen, rich resolution and Microsoft Mobile Office applications. Although reviewer Jamie Lendino declares the standalone PDA dead, Lendino says for those who still need and use them, "the HP iPAQ 210 will serve with aplomb."

PDA Reviews
by Editors of MobileTechReview.com
Our Assessment

MobileTechReview.com features highly detailed and comprehensive reviews. PDAs are mostly covered in individual reports, but are frequently compared to similar models. Among current devices, the Palm Tungsten E2 remains an Editor's Choice recommendation. Editor-in-Chief Lisa Gade says that the E2 is not for power users, but is an "excellent mid-range PDA" at a "near budget price." Newer HP models iPAQ 110/111 and iPAQ 210/211 also get top grades, scoring four out of five stars. Among other PDAs, the Palm Z22 gets kudos as the best budget choice. The HP iPAQ rx5900/5915 is a good combination PDA and GPS device.

PDAs/Handheld
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment It has been nearly two years since Consumer Reports last reported on PDAs, but many models remain available. Consumer Reports gives PDAs the same competent and even-handed treatment it affords other categories, though the magazine can't match dedicated computing publications and websites for thoroughness and detailed reviews.

Hardware Reviews
by Editors of PDAStreet.com
Our Assessment

PDAStreet.com reviews PDAs and other mobile computing devices. Reviews are critical, but not as detailed as at the better review resources. Ratings are not given, but PDAs are occasionally compared to one another. Among current PDAs, Troy Dreier praises the HP iPAQ 110 Classic because it "reminds us of what we gave up when we let the PDA go." Gerry Blackwell says that the HP iPAQ rx5900/5915 with GPS is pricey, but "a nifty tool to take on a trip." Palm's E2, Z22 and TX receive complimentary reviews as well. Troy Dreier says that the Palm Z22 is a "basic and easy-to-use PDA at an unbeatable price." He also writes that the Palm TX is a "great all-around performer."

Handheld/Palmtop/PDAs
by Editors of Smart Computing
Our Assessment

Smart Computing and its sister publications, PC Today and Computer Power User, occasionally cover PDAs. Most of the short write-ups seem more like product announcements than reviews; however, more in-depth coverage can sometimes be found. The HP iPAQ rx5900/5915 Travel Companion gets a nod from Jennifer Johnson for Best Hardware. Johnson loves this GPS-enabled PDA for its easy-to-use GPS programs and wide array of programs and features, including mobile versions of Microsoft Office programs and wireless and Bluetooth features. In a face-off between the Palm Z22 and Palm TX in PC Today, Chad Denton concludes that while the TX is considerably more expensive, its networking and multimedia capabilities, along with a better display, make it the better choice.

Mini-Review: PalmOne Tungsten E2
by Matt Miller
Our Assessment Though this review of the Palm Tungsten E2 is not particularly long, it does a good job of covering the essentials. A nice plus is that the review is well illustrated. The reviewer describes the E2's performance as "zippy," and adds that it feels solid and is comfortable to hold. Excellent battery life is also appreciated.

Palm TX Handheld Brings Affordable WiFi to PDAs
by Barry Gerber
Our Assessment GearDigest.com is an offshoot of Tom's Guide, the popular technology website. A multitude of mobile computing devices, including PDAs and accessories, are reviewed here, but most of the PDA reviews are now out of date. One exception is the Palm TX, featured in this review. The PDA is said to be a good value, but reviewer Barry Gerber had setup issues.

How to Buy a PDA
by Editors of PC World
Our Assessment

Although PC World has largely abandoned its PDA coverage in favor of rating smartphones with PDA capabilities, this article on what to look for when shopping for PDAs is both current and useful. It outlines what the editors consider to be the most important considerations when shopping for a PDA (e.g., key specifications and features to look for), and it also gives several useful shopping tips. Specific PDA models are not reviewed or recommended in this article.

iPAQ rx5900: A Worthy Travel Companion?
by James A. Martin
Our Assessment

As smartphones have overtaken PDAs in the marketplace, PDA coverage is disappearing on sites like PC World. This review of an HP iPAQ rx5900/5915 is one of the only recent PDA reviews. Although James Martin is initially wowed by this PDA's variety of GPS features and pleased with the design, his final verdict is disappointment. Martin complains that the GPS consistently offers "truly convoluted directions" instead of the most direct routes and takes five to 10 minutes for the GPS signal to connect. Martin praises the strong PDA features, but doesn't see the value in paying such a high price for a PDA that will become obsolete.

SmartPhone Reviews
by Editors of Brighthand.com
Our Assessment

PDA reviews are not easily findable on this site since standalone PDA and smartphone reviews are now lumped together. Although the reviews on this site are generally very detailed and competent, and opinions about a PDA's pluses and minuses are offered, PDAs are not rated or compared to each other. Finding specific PDA reviews requires either having a specific model in mind beforehand or sifting through hundreds of reviews to pick out the PDA-only ones. However, one useful feature is that the site provides links to PDA reviews at other sites. Brighthand.com gives positive reviews for the perennially top-rated Palm TX and Z22, plus high marks for the newest HP iPAQ's 110/111 and 210/211 and GPS-enabled rx5900/5915.

PDA Reviews
by Editors of PDABuzz.com
Our Assessment

Despite this site's name, like many other sources, smartphone coverage has mostly eclipsed that of PDAs. It is difficult to find standalone PDA reviews here without scanning through hundreds of daily blog entries. This is a better review site for PDA accessories, such as games, cases and headsets, than for PDAs themselves. Since it's hard to find reviews of these accessories at other sources, PDABuzz.com has an edge in this area.

PDAs
by Contributors to Epinions.com
Our Assessment

It's a good idea to check Epinions.com when you have your choice narrowed down to a couple of PDA models. Because most PDAs have been around for a while, many have received a significant amount of feedback. A few, however, have received no comments at all. One positive is that reviews tend to be more detailed than at other user review sites, and sometimes they even rival professional reviews for thoroughness. The Palm E2, Z22 and TX all receive decent reviews averaging three to four stars (out of five) each from 30 to 40 consumer reviewers. There were virtually no reviews available for top HP PDAs at the time of our visit.

Handhelds and PDAs
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our Assessment Like most user-review sites, the quality and usefulness of the reviews at Amazon.com is variable. Interestingly, just about all PDAs end up with the same average four-star rating, even after hundreds of reviews. The individual write-ups are worth reading, but the average ratings don't really help you figure out which might be better than others.

PDA Reviews and Prices
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our Assessment

ConsumerGuide.com's PDA coverage is not as thorough as it used to be, and there are not many current reviews in this category. The reviews themselves seem to be based more on manufacturer-supplied information than on actual testing. Editors give the HP iPaq rx5900 Travel Companion a CG Best Buy nod for its good performance and GPS capabilities, despite its high price. The inexpensive Palm Z22 is named a Budget Buy for a decent range of features in a tiny package for under $100.
