Almond butter tends to be comparable to peanut butter in calories and fat, but almonds contain more minerals, such as calcium and iron. Additionally, almond butter has other health benefits, such as lower saturated fat and more fiber. Unfortunately, we didn't find many expert reviews comparing almond butters, although a few reviews compare one chosen brand of almond butter to several brands of peanut butter. Generally, consumers say almond butter is less rich and nutty than peanut butter.
GrubGrade.com is one such review that compares Barney Butter Smooth Almond Butter (*Est. $9 for a 16-oz. jar) to five natural peanut butters and a reduced-fat peanut butter spread. Four of the natural peanut butters are ranked ahead of Barney Butter. Compared to peanut butter, Barney Butter's texture was "on the grainy side," taste was "bland" and spreadability was "average," reviewers say. However, keep in mind that this review is comparing it to peanut butter, not other almond butters.
At Amazon.com, Barney Butter gets an overall rating of 4.5 stars from more than 40 consumers. Here, reviews praise the smooth texture that closely resembles peanut butter. Although the flavor is rather mild, it has a nice sweetness. In addition to almonds, Barney Butter is made with evaporated cane juice, palm fruit oil and sea salt. A 2-tablespoon serving contains 180 calories, but its 15 grams of fat and 1.5 grams of saturated fat are less than regular peanut butter. It also contains more calcium, iron, vitamin E and magnesium than regular peanut butter. Those who are using almond butter due to a peanut sensitivity will appreciate the fact that Barney Butter is made in a peanut-free facility. The manufacturer says no refrigeration is required.
Justin's Natural Classic Almond Butter (*Est. $10 for 16-oz. jar) is another popular brand at Amazon.com. Made with just almonds and palm oil, a 2-tablespoon serving of this almond butter has 200 calories and 18 grams of fat, which is more than Barney Butter. Justin's offers roughly double the fiber (4 grams) and iron of peanut butter, plus calcium.
Epicurious.com is the only review we found that includes more than one brand of almond butter. Editors assemble an impressive judging panel of adults and children to compare Woodstock Farms Natural Almond Butter (*Est. $11 for a 16-oz. jar) and Nature's Promise Organic Almond Butter (a private-label brand sold at Stop & Shop grocery stores) to seven other nut butters. This review summarizes the testers' comments rather than picking a winner. Overall, the panel likes the taste of both almond butters, but adults prefer the texture of the Woodstock Farms, which contains nothing but almonds.
