We found the best peanut butter reviews in Cook's Illustrated, which obviously specializes in food and employs thorough testing. Cook's suggests that Smucker's Natural performed well in cookies. We also found useful reviews in the St. Petersburg Times, Newsday and The Washington Post. Real Simple has a free report, but it's not very detailed.

Processed peanut butters have hydrogenated fats to maintain consistency and usually contain more sugar and salt than "natural" peanut butters like Smucker's Natural. In blind taste tests that compare processed and natural brands, the natural peanut butters do not fare as well, but Smucker's usually finishes as the choice among similar products. Natural peanut butters usually fare better with adults than with children. Newsday used only children ages 8 to13 for its taste test, and no "natural" peanut butter finished higher than fifth, with Smucker's coming in sixth. The lower sugar content is probably a major reason why. But even adult tasters in a Cook's Illustrated test cited "lack of sugar" as well as a graininess and the "oil slick on top" as negatives. Worth noting is that "natural" products finished significantly better in a Washington Post review; Smucker's was third overall, ahead of every natural contender. It also is said to be good in cookies.

In this report, Cook's Illustrated reviews nine peanut butters from six different brands. Editors base their findings on two taste tests: straight from the jar and baked into peanut butter cookies.

2. Cook's Illustrated Magazine

Cook's Illustrated used 20 staffers to taste eight peanut butters in this dated but still useful review.

3. St. Petersburg Times

This newspaper article states that Smucker's comes in sixth out of 12 products, although the story doesn't say which Smucker's peanut butter was sampled.

4. Newsday.com

Newsday asked eleven kids to taste eight creamy and eight chunky peanut butters spread on white bread. Smucker's Natural Creamy placed sixth overall, but it's worth noting that none of the "natural" peanut butters fared well with the kids - Trader Joe's Natural Creamy was fifth and Whole Foods' 365 Natural Creamy was seventh.

5. The Washington Post

The Washington Post taste tests 19 smooth peanut butters, with Smucker's Natural Creamy finishing third behind Simply Jif Creamy and Skippy Creamy, although the "natural" peanut butter is admittedly more "adult-friendly … with none of the sweetness associated with the childhood favorites."

6. Real Simple

Real Simple devotes a lot of space to food but doesn't say how many tasters sampled the "top three best-selling brands and the best-selling natural brand" of peanut butter. That means zero competition for natural winner Smucker's Natural Crunchy, which, for what it's worth, has "intense peanut flavor and nutty texture."
