In tests, the New-Lifestyles NL-2000 Accelerometer has proven to be very accurate in counting steps for people who walk at speeds of 2.5 mph or less. This device is also accurate for people with waist measurements of 40 inches or more. The New-Lifestyles NL-2000 counts activity calories and can calculate total calories expended a day, based on your basal metabolic rate (or calories your body burns at rest). The accelerometer is quiet because it has no moving parts, but some reviewers say certain body movements, like opening the cover, registered as a step. If you want a pedometer that also tracks distance traveled, reviewers and owners recommend the Omron GoSmart Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 (*Est. $25).
ConsumerReports.org includes the New-Lifestyles NL-2000 Accelerometer in its comparison of pedometers. The medical journal of the American College of Sports Medicine includes it in two studies comparing accuracy of 10 or more pedometers. It is one of five pedometers reviewed in the publication of the National Education Association. About.com and CNNMoney.com also test the New-Lifestyles NL-2000 pedometer. New-Lifestyles pedometers are only available from the manufacturer, so they are not as widely available as some other well-rated models.
