Best pedometer
- Highly accurate in most situations
- Multiple placement options
- Large display is easy to read
- Bulky
- Less accurate in a pants pocket
Reviewers praise the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 as a very accurate pedometer that is sturdy and easy to use. In both clinical and consumer testing, the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 precisely counts steps at both slow and fast walking speeds -- even for overweight individuals. The pedometer uses dual accelerometers to count steps, so it can be worn in more positions (including in a shirt pocket) than traditional spring-levered pedometers. On the whole, reviewers like the convenience of wearing this pedometer in multiple locations. Most users have nothing but praise for the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112, but a few downsides emerge in reviews. For one, some reviewers think the pedometer is a bit bulky. In addition, a few owners report problems with their step count resetting in the middle of the day. Overall, this pedometer (which tracks steps, aerobic steps, time and calories) earns excellent reviews. If you only want a basic pedometer that counts nothing but steps, reviewers also like the Accusplit Eagle AE120XL (*Est. $17).
We found the best feedback on the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 in a study published in Science & Medicine in Sports & Exercise, the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. No reviews really come close to these two, but we found additional reviews from the National Education Association and About.com. Unlike most other pedometers, there is a wealth of owner-written reviews on the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112, especially at Amazon.com, Buzzillions.com and Walmart.com.

1. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise
Researchers enlist nearly 100 walkers to test the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 pedometer while they walk on a treadmill at varying speeds. The steps were manually recorded by an investigator and compared to the control pedometer, the Yamax Digi-Walker SW-701. Interestingly, not only does the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 score excellent results for accuracy, but it outperforms the Yamax Digi-Walker SW-701 at every walking speed.

NEA Today, the magazine of the National Education Association, highlights five pedometers, with each pedometer receiving brief feedback from Scott Crouter, a pedometer expert at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. The Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 is praised for its accuracy, and Crouter mentions that the pedometer should not be affected by body size thanks to internal accelerometers. It should be noted that the site mixes up pictures and does not display the correct picture next to the review of the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-112).
