by P. Schneider, S. Crouter, D. Bassett Jr.
Our Assessment

This article abstract summarizes results of a clinical study conducted by the University of Tennessee in which 20 volunteers wore a control pedometer (the Yamax SW-200), and one of 12 other pedometers simultaneously. According to the study, five models "significantly underestimated" steps, while three others "significantly overestimated" total steps. The Kenz Lifecorder, New-Lifestyles NL-2000 and Yamax Digi-Walker SW-701 are rated as most accurate.

Validity of the Omron HJ-112 Pedometer during Treadmill Walking
by Rebecca Hasson, et. al.
Our Assessment

This abstract summarizes a study on the accuracy of the top-rated Omron HJ-112 pedometer. Nearly 100 adults of various body sizes test the pedometer at multiple walking speeds on a treadmill. The Omron HJ-112 performs accurately at all walking speeds. In fact, the Omron HJ-112 is more accurate in this test than the control pedometer, the Yamax Digi-Walker SW-701. The researchers did find that the Omron HJ-112 is less accurate when placed in a pants pocket.

Validity and Reliability of Omron Pedometers for Prescribed and Self-Paced Walking
by Elizabeth A. Holbrook; Tiago V. Barreira; Minsoo Kang
Our Assessment

This study tests the accuracy of two Omron pedometers, the HJ-151 and HJ-720ITC. Nearly 50 adults test the pedometers at different positions during slow, moderate and very brisk walks. Both pedometers perform well in the test, although the Omron HJ-720ITC did not perform as well when placed in a backpack. Overall, the researchers conclude that both pedometers are reliable, even for overweight adults.

Pedometers Ratings
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our Assessment Consumer Reports tests six pedometers, including the Omron HJ-112, assigning each model a rating on accuracy, ease of use and features. Accuracy tests are conducted against a control, and ease of use ratings consider whether the panelists would consider purchasing the pedometer. Consumer Reports also tests the Sportline Solo 960 in a companion report on heart-rate monitors.

Picking a Pedometer
by Gini Kopecky Wallace and Scott Crouter
Our Assessment

NEA Today is the magazine of the National Education Association. In this short article, five pedometers are evaluated by Scott Crouter, a professor of exercise and health science at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Readers should note that the pictures displayed next to each pedometer are not the correct models. Crouter likes the Yamax Digi-Walker SW-200, which he has previously used as a control in studies. The Freestyle Pacer Pro and the Sportline Fitness Pro 360 are not as "durable or accurate as the Digi-Walker." The New-Lifestyles NL-2000 and the Omron HJ-112 are also evaluated.

Pedometer Ratings: GH Picks the Best Pedometers
by Annie Daly
Our Assessment

The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tests 10 pedometer models in a lab and uses 17 testers to evaluate them on a treadmill and during self-paced walk. Testing criteria include durability, accuracy, ease of use and overall performance. Of the 10 pedometers tested, three models are picked as favorites: the Accusplit Eagle 190 Multi-Function, the Yamax CW-300 Digi-Walker and the Omron Pocket Pedometer HJ-720ITC. Unfortunately, the pedometers that didn't make the cut are not identified.

Top 10 Best Pedometers
by Wendy Bumgardner
Our Assessment

Wendy Bumgardner, About.com's guide to walking, lists her top 10 pedometers, and she writes an individual review for most pedometers. The reviews themselves focus on features, but it appears some of them were tested firsthand, while others are recommended by various other sources. The Omron HJ-112 sits in the top spot, followed by the Yamax Digi-Walker CW-701. The pedometers are not compared to one another, and we're not sure why some models are ranked more highly than others. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

The Anatomy of a Pedometer
by Editors of Pedometers.com
Our Assessment

Pedometers.com, which is run by an engineering firm that specializes in product testing, is a good source for balanced, brief reviews of pedometers. The firm rates each pedometer on accuracy, reliability, mechanics, usability, size, battery life and durability; each pedometer also gets an overall rating. While some reviewers have a tendency to only focus on the positives, Pedometers.com pulls no punches in its reviews -- some pedometers receive a half star or less. The reviews aren't dated, and some of the models have been discontinued, so it's hard to know when this was last updated.
