Pedometers Ratings
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentEditors at ConsumerReports.org rate test six pedometers and provide separate ratings for accuracy, ease of use and features. Although three models receive the highest rating for accuracy (tested against a control), only one model performed well at both low and high speeds. The rating for ease of use is based on whether the panelists would consider purchasing the pedometer. ConsumerReports.org editors also test two GPS devices that measure speed and distance.
Pedometer Measures of Free-Living Physical Activity: Comparison of 13 Models
by P. Schneider, S. Crouter, D. Bassett Jr.
Our AssessmentThis article abstract in the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine summarizes results of a clinical study measuring the accuracy of pedometers during routine daily activity. Each of 20 volunteers wore a control pedometer (the Yamax Digi-Walker SW-200), and one of 12 other pedometers simultaneously. The Kenz Lifecorder (now replaced by the Lifecorder EX), New-Lifestyles NL-2000 Accelerometer and Yamax Digi-Walker SW-701 are rated as most accurate. Some pedometers underestimated steps by as much as 25 percent, and others overestimated steps by as much as 45 percent.
Validity of the Omron HJ-112 Pedometer during Treadmill Walking
by Rebecca Hasson, et. al.
Our AssessmentThe Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise is the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. This abstract summarizes a study on the accuracy of the Omron GoSmart Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 pedometer. Nearly 100 adults of various body sizes test the pedometer at multiple walking speeds on a treadmill. The Omron performs accurately at all walking speeds. In fact, this Omron is more accurate in this test than the control pedometer, the Yamax Digi-Walker SW-701. The researchers did find that the Omron HJ-112 is less accurate when placed in a pants pocket.

by Elizabeth A. Holbrook; Tiago V. Barreira; Minsoo Kang
Our AssessmentThis study in the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine tests the accuracy of two Omron pedometers, the GoSmart Hip Pedometer HJ-151 and GoSmart Pocket Pedometer with PC Software HJ-720ITC. Nearly 50 adults test the pedometers at different positions during slow, moderate and very brisk walks. Both pedometers perform well in the test, although the GoSmart Pocket Pedometer with PC Software did not perform as well when placed in a backpack. Overall, the researchers conclude that both pedometers are reliable, even for overweight adults.

by P. Schneider, S. Crouter, D. Bassett Jr., Olivera Lukajic
Our AssessmentThis clinical study in the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine measures the accuracy of 10 pedometers at a walking pace on an indoor track. The Kenz Lifecorder (now the Lifecorder EX), New-Lifestyles NL-2000 Accelerometer and Yamax Digi-Walker SW-701 were the most accurate. The Omron HJ-105 (now discontinued) and Sportline 330 were the least accurate.

Picking a Pedometer
by Gini Kopecky Wallace
Our AssessmentNEA Today is the magazine of the National Education Association. Scott Crouter, an associate professor of exercise and health science at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, and an unknown panel evaluate five pedometers. (Readers should note that the pictures displayed next to each pedometer are not the correct models.) Crouter recommends the cost-effective Yamax Digi-Walker SW-200 for normal-weight individuals. The Freestyle Pacer Pro and the Sportline 360 Total Fitness Pedometer are not as "durable or accurate as the Digi-Walker." Crouter also recommends the New-Lifestyles NL-2000 Accelerometer and the Omron GoSmart Pocket Pedometer HJ-112, which have accelerometers for accuracy regardless of girth or position of the device.

Top 9 Best Pedometers
by Wendy Bumgardner
Our AssessmentWendy Bumgardner, About.com's guide to walking, lists her top nine pedometers, and she writes an individual review for most pedometers. The reviews themselves focus on features, but it appears some of them were tested firsthand, while others are recommended by various other sources. The Omron GoSmart Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 sits in the top spot, followed by the Yamax Digi-Walker CW-701 and Omron GoSmart Pocket Pedometer HJ-720ITC. The pedometers are not compared to one another, and we're not sure why some models are ranked more highly than others. Bumgardner reviews the Timex Ironman Fitness Tracker in a separate review. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)
