Reviews say Adobe Photoshop Elements is the best photo-editing software for most nonprofessionals if you aren't doing a lot of web tasks. Experts say it's simpler and cheaper than Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (*Est. $275), more complex and versatile than Google Picasa (Free) and better organized than its major competition, Corel PaintShop Photo Pro (*Est. $100).There is a guided level for novices, though one review says its purpose is getting the job done rather than preparing you for the more advanced levels. There are lots of special effects beyond the usual photo-enhancement features.
This latest version, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, doesn't have a ton of new features compared to its predecessor, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7, but a new tool for resizing just parts of images draws some kudos. All of the great features found in earlier versions, such as a photomerge tool that blends a series of similar photos to create one perfect shot are carried over. Photoshop Elements 8 works with Windows machines (Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP) as well as Macs. One caveat is that user reviews could be more uniformly positive, but that's not unusual for sophisticated photo-editing software, and no comparable program scores much higher.
There are lots of credible reviews for Adobe Photoshop Elements. We found the best ones at PCMag.com and PC World. Mac users will also want to see a detailed report in Macworld. Amazon.com is the best source of user reviews.

This review of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 praises its photo recomposition feature, tight online-service integration, extensive tutorials and overall balance of power and features for the price. Only the fact that some tutorials require extra fees prevented it from receiving a perfect 5 stars. However, it does garner an Editors' Choice award.

PC World rates Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 a score of 4.5 out of 5 stars. The review gives a thumbs up to the program's easier keywording and robust organizer features, and says the new version is "like a family station wagon with a Formula One racing engine under the hood," offering much of the power of Photoshop with an easy, accessible interface.
Review: Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, Sally Wiener Grotta and Daniel Grotta, Sept. 22, 2009
This enthusiastic review praises the features in Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 but doesn't compare it with any other software except Adobe's pro-level Photoshop CS4. That said, the review is very detailed and covers issues with the software on older PowerPC-based Macs. The reviewer recommends Elements for any nonprofessional photographer, since it's powerful yet easy to use.

4. Amazon.com
Owner-written reviews give Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 an unimpressive average score of 3 stars. Opinions are almost evenly split between those who love the program and those who don't. All say the program is powerful. Some say Elements is easy to use, but others complain that the learning curve is steep. The organizer aspect of the software is a subject of dissatisfaction for some users.
