Most reviewers are impressed by the detailed, richly colored photos produced by the Canon Selphy ES1 personal photo printer. The Selphy ES1 is a thermal dye printer, so it uses a different ink and printing technology than inkjets. While reviewers say the photos are nice, they do take a bit longer than an inkjet photo printer like the Epson PictureMate Dash PM 260 (*est. $100). The Canon Selphy is a compact, portable package that reviewers agree is easy to set up and can be easily carried with its built-in handle. An optional battery pack (*est. $100) extends this portability aspect even further. Per-photo costs are higher, however -- about 30 cents per print, and high cost of consumables is the main complaint in user reviews. A few also think the photos come out a bit too dark.
We've seen professional reviews for the Canon Selphy ES1 from American Photo, Laptop Magazine, PrinterInfo.com and Consumer Reports. User feedback thus far is fairly limited, but Amazon.com visitors still offer some helpful insights in their user reviews.

American Photo names the Canon Selphy ES1 a 2007 Editor's Choice. Testers are impressed with the numerous built-in photo editing tools, print resolution and the unit's overall portability. Browsing photos on the built-in LCD is slow, however, and some prints' skin tones seemed too warm or too cool compared to other printers.
Review: Editor's Choice 2007: Snapshot Printers -- Canon Selphy ES1, Aimee Baldridge, July/Aug. 2007
Laptop Magazine says prints are good, but can't excuse the long (by thermal-dye printer standards) time it takes to produce a photo. The reviewer also notes that because of the way the ES1 handles paper, prints are sometimes slightly misaligned.
Review: Canon Selphy ES1 Review, Anthony Losanno, May 2, 2007
PrinterInfo.com says that with the Selphy ES1, Canon has "taken dye-sub printers to the next level of convenience." The unit's design, portability and user-friendliness are all mentioned as high points, but prints are just mediocre, and they take a long time to produce. The writer notes that less costly, high-quality alternatives can be found.
