Where to Buy

In reviews that compare multiple pie plates, including an eight-pan test from Cook's Illustrated, metal pans aren't generally recommended. That's because metal conducts heat too well, leaving you with an overbaked crust. However, this aluminum pie pan from NordicWare performs well in a review at Good Housekeeping, and owners like it, too. A nice bonus is that it comes with a high-domed lid -- handy for storing and transporting pies with delicate meringue and whipped-topping layers that could be easily squished. A big complaint in user reviews is that the metal pie plate becomes discolored when cleaned in the dishwasher (though otherwise it's dishwasher-safe).

The NordicWare pie pan is included in a 17-pan test at Good Housekeeping, where editors bake a double-crust apple-berry pie as a test. Owner reviews can be found at Amazon.com and other retail sites. For the most part, this pie pan gets very high ratings except for the discoloration issue.

Our Sources

1. Good Housekeeping

A veteran tester with Good Housekeeping's Research Institute, Franke describes the results of a test of 17 pie plates using a recipe for a double-crusted apple-berry pie. She says the NordicWare pie pan provides a beautiful golden-brown crust and its wide rim makes it easy to grasp. Acknowledging that the pan will discolor if it's put through the dishwasher, she notes that it comes clean easily when hand-washed.

2. Amazon.com

Amazon.com is a good source of user product reviews, although bakeware generally doesn't get as many comments as other categories. Even so, the nearly 35 users posting to this website give this NordicWare pan an average 4.5 stars out of 5. Users say the construction is sturdy and durable, the top fits well and the pan bakes crusts to a nice golden-brown. Two owners, however, complain that the finish on their pans was ruined after they put them through the dishwasher, and one says the pan's bottom became pitted after use.

3. Cooking.com

Cooking.com is one of the best resources for user reviews of cookware and bakeware. The site also summarizes the percentage of users who would recommend the product and/or consider it a good value. Although there aren't as many reviews for this pie pan as for other bakeware items, the reviews here provide a good overview of this NordicWare pie dish. The more than 15 users posting to this site give it an average 4.5 stars out of 5. Comments include, "The cover is really a plus," and "I got way more for my buck than anticipated." One user complains, however, that the lid is hard to remove and the pan scratches easily.
