Though the 60-inch LG 60PK550 has its share of warts, most are minor and easy to overlook in light of its tiny price tag for such a big screen. Picture quality is excellent overall, but sticklers will note that black levels are not as deep as some top performers, such as the 42-inch Panasonic TC-P42G25 (Discontinued), which is also available in a 54-inch model as the Panasonic TC-P54G25 (*Est. $1,450). Most -- though not all -- critics say color performance is very good and the TV includes LG's good array of picture controls and built-in calibration aids to adjust settings to the user's liking. One negative that could turn off some is that the LG 60PK550 is not exactly a lightweight when it comes to energy consumption, and it fails to meet Energy Star qualifications. A 50-inch screen size, the LG 50PK550 (*Est. $880), is also offered.

We saw several reports for the 60-inch LG 60PK550. It is among the plasma TVs currently rated by ConsumerReports.org, though the discussion is fairly brief. It's also the subject of some relatively technical reviews at HDTVByChadB.com and PlasmaTVBuyingGuide.com. Some user feedback can be read at Amazon.com.

Imaging Science Foundation-certified technician Chad Billheimer rates HDTVs -- including plasma TVs -- he's calibrated. Numerical information is provided here, and links lead to more in-depth discussions posted at AVSForum.com. His rating is of the smaller 50-inch LG 50PK550, but Billheimer says his conclusions also should apply to other screen sizes in the series such as the 60-inch 60PK550. Though some work with the plasma TV's extensive picture controls were needed to achieve better results, Billheimer says the result is "outstanding" picture quality.
