Most critics say that while 3D might get all the attention, the real reason to get the 50-inch Panasonic TC-P50VT25 is its absolutely top-shelf picture quality when displaying 2D images. Some reviewers go so far as to say that it is nearly the most impressive set ever tested in that regard. Deep and satisfying black levels are a big reason why. It's too early to know if the compliments are deserved; initial testing indicates last year's fading black-level issue hasn't been repeated in the 2010 models but long-term testing is still ongoing. Other aspects of picture quality -- color accuracy, uniformity, off-axis viewing and more -- get unequivocal praise from most reviewers. Another plus is an anti-glare screen that holds up better in well-lit rooms than most plasma TVs, past or present.

The feature lineup is strong, namely 3D viewing. Panasonic even throws in the first pair of 3D glasses for free, though you'll need to get additional ones (*Est. $150 each) unless you watch TV alone. The 3D effect is reportedly good, and crosstalk -- ghost images -- is kept to a minimum, though not completely eliminated. However, the TC-P50VT25 can't convert 2D content to 3D, something that's in the bag of tricks of the Samsung PN58C7000 (Discontinued), so 3D viewing opportunities remain very limited. The THX mode, which is adjustable, helps make sure you get the same viewing experience at home that you would in a theater. Internet connectivity is included, but the lineup of providers is sparse compared to some other Internet-capable TVs. That said, the ability to make Skype calls via the TC-P50VT25 (and an optional $170 accessory) may be a plus for some. The TC-P50VT25 is Energy Star-rated, though it still draws more power than most LCD TVs, especially those with LED backlights.

This Panasonic plasma TV is also available in a wide variety of other screen sizes, including the 54-inch Panasonic TC-P54VT25 (*Est. $3,000), 58-inch Panasonic TC-P58VT25 (*Est. $3,400) and 65-inch TC-P65VT25 (*Est. $4,300). In addition, Best Buy exclusively offers a nearly identical version of the TC-PV50VT25 (only minor differences separate the two) as the 50-inch Panasonic TC-P50VT20 (*Est. $2,000). Though they remain current, these sets are becoming hard to find.

Our Sources

1. CNET

CNET rates the 50-inch Panasonic TC-P50VT25 as the best TV -- plasma or LCD -- thus far in 2010. In fact, David Katzmaier says while 3D is nice, excepting the now-discontinued Pioneer Kuro plasma TVs, the Panasonic TC-P50VT25 is the best 2D set that the site has ever tested. CNET is still conducting ongoing tests on black levels, but initial results show no black-level fade thus far.

2. ConsumerReports.org

ConsumerReports.org reports on the 50-inch Panasonic TC-P50VT20, identical to the 50-inch Panasonic TC-P50VT25 except for some minor details. Discussion could and should be meatier, but highs and lows are listed, and ratings are provided.

3. HDGuru3-D.com

Self-proclaimed "HDGuru" Gary Merson is one of the first reviewers with a report of the Panasonic TC-P50VT20, a Best Buy exclusive version of the Panasonic TC-P50VT25. Some quibbles are noted, but overall the plasma TV is well-praised for its 2D and 3D performance.

4. TelevisionInfo.com

TelevisionInfo.com gives the Panasonic TC-P50VT20 the harshest review we've seen -- not an uncommon occurrence given the site's penchant for unflinching critiques. Picture quality is described as merely average, and 3D performance and Internet features leave Mark Brezinski, David Kender and Richard Baguley rather cold.

5. BestBuy.com

User feedback for Panasonic's TC-PVT20/25 series is limited thus far, but the TC-P50VT20 gathers a decent amount of reviews at BestBuy.com. Overall the rating is good, though it is dragged down slightly by a few posting about potential problems with black levels that fade over time. One complains about the lack of 3D content.
