- Very deep blacks
- THX certification
- Midrange pricing is good value
- Online access
- Limited light output in THX mode
- Standard-definition video looks soft
- Not as energy-efficient as LCD TVs
- Not as many picture controls as some TVs
The 50-inch Panasonic Viera TC-P50G10 plasma TV gets good reviews from professionals and users. Although the Panasonic Viera TC-P50V10 (*Est. $2,100) is considered the best in its size, the TC-P50G10 is over $700 cheaper. Both are THX-certified, and reviews say they each have incredible black levels, but the cheaper model has less sophisticated video processing and fewer user-adjustable picture controls. The TC-P50G10 includes Viera Cast, which allows you to view limited online content if you have a network connection nearby (no wireless). While reviews are very positive about the viewing quality of the Panasonic Viera TC-P50G10, some point out that brightness is reduced in THX mode (so viewing is best in dimly lit rooms). And of course, LCDs are lighter, more energy efficient and fare better in brighter rooms than most plasma TVs.
We found the best reviews at CNET and ConsumerReports.org. CNET's coverage is free, but it bases its review on the 46-inch TC-P46G10 rather than the 50-inch set. HDGuru.com also weighs in with a detailed report, but the site tests fewer TVs than CNET and ConsumerReports.org. Lots of user reviews are posted on Amazon.com.
