If your main concern is good picture quality at a great price, reports say the 50-inch Samsung PN50C450 could fill the bill. Those looking for cutting-edge features or the absolute best picture quality will want to look elsewhere. Black levels don't compete with high-end TVs such as the Panasonic TC-P50VT25 (Discontinued), but are pretty good in their own right, especially when you consider that the PN50C450 costs less than a third as much. Color performance is also excellent, especially with high-definition content. Few picture quality flaws are noted in reports, though we did see some complaints regarding false contouring in some scenes. Features are few and far between -- you can certainly forget about 3D or Internet connectivity. Resolution is also only 720p, but many experts say that this screen size at typical viewing distances is just enough to give HD its due. One plus is that sound is said to be better than many flat-panel TVs and certainly better than with many budget choices. A 42-inch version, the Samsung PN42C450 (*Est. $500), is also available.

ConsumerReports.org has the best professional review of the 50-inch Samsung PN50C450. There's also substantial user feedback available at Amazon.com and BestBuy.com.

2. BestBuy.com

BestBuy.com has the largest accumulation of user reviews we found -- nearly 90 and growing. Satisfaction is clearly high as more than 95 percent of those say they are pleased enough with the 50-inch Samsung PN50C450 to recommend it to a friend. A few quibbles are raised here and there, however, including the fact that the plasma TV has some issues dealing with glare in brightly lit spaces.

3. Amazon.com

There are less than half as many user reviews of the Samsung PN50C450 here as at BestBuy.com, however the pattern of satisfaction is similar. One review complaining of a set that arrived broken in shipping and another saying that the TV failed after a couple of months of use are the only completely negative assessments. Value leads the list of reasons why users give the plasma TV a resounding thumbs-up.
