In this report, we cover plasma TVs. The other flat-panel technology is LCD, available in screen sizes as small as 8 inches or as large as 75 inches. For more information, see our report on LCD TVs.
If you aren't attached to the idea of a flat panel, you get more screen for your money with a rear-projection TV (RPTV). However, choices are disappearing, and only one major manufacturer -- Mitsubishi -- is still producing RPTVs. Please see our separate report for more information on projection TVs.
We found several terrific articles and buyer's guides outlining the types of TVs and explaining HDTV technology.
CNET's "Quick Guide: HDTV 101," is a very informative resource.
CNET also offers a television buying guide that talks you through everything there is to consider before choosing a TV.
ConsumerReports.org also has a good guide to the types of televisions and to HDTV, although you must be a subscriber to read it.
THX, a technology and certification company founded by "Star Wars" director George Lucas, has developed a certification program for all types of HD displays, including plasma. You can learn more about THX and the THX Display Certification program at the company's website:
