The EdgeStar Extreme Cool AP12000S is a good value: It's packed with features, yet costs less than most portable air conditioners of this size. Enhancing its cooling performance is a 3M carbon filter, a three-speed fan and a dehumidifier function that removes up to 80 pints of water every day. EdgeStar's three-year limited warranty is better than the average coverage. The AP12000S is also sold under the Koldfront name, which is partnered with EdgeStar.
Cool, dry, filtered air. The EdgeStar Extreme Cool AP12000S combines three different functions to maximize its cooling powers. It removes up to 80 pints of water from the air everyday (lowering the humidity for a more comfortable environment), customizes the temperature between 61 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit with a programmable timer, and blasts air with a three-speed fan. As a bonus, the 3M carbon air filter removes pollen, mold and dust from the air. Most owner reviews say this 12,000-Btu unit is plenty powerful, even when cooling rooms larger than the recommended 425 square feet. It's fairly quiet as well, operating at 52 decibels on low and 54 on high.
Self-evaporating system. The Extreme Cool's auto drain system collects water from the air and evaporates it out of the exhaust hose, lowering the humidity in your room. This does away with the chore of having to drain a tank by hand, though owners in very humid climates might still need to occasionally empty excess water. At 68 pounds, some owners "found it heavy when it comes to draining (condensation) water from the reservoir," says Mariette Mifflin, the appliances guide at About.com. A few reviewers say installing the window kit can be a little cumbersome, but it's still manageable for one person.
Solid and efficient. That's how most owners describe the EdgeStar Extreme Cool AP12000S. It's the least expensive large portable air conditioner in our report, and reviews say that its extra features and price tag under $400 make it a great value. "The programmable timer function will help with energy savings, so you can run it only when you want to and with a high 10.0 EER ratio, this unit is reasonably energy efficient by design," says About.com's Mifflin. Owners say it's reliable, even after several years of use. EdgeStar covers parts and labor for the first year, and warranties the compressor and its parts for three years.
Mariette Mifflin, the housewares and appliances guide for About.com, lists six top portable air conditioners. She bases her picks on owner reviews, features and price. The EdgeStar AP12000S gets her pick as the best unit for medium to large spaces, pointing out its programmable time, efficient dehumidifying and low noise.
