Bottom line

The Koldfront Ultracool PAC801W is the least expensive portable air conditioner in our report, and users say that this compact unit is a pretty good value. It circulates air with three fan speeds and takes very little effort to install. As a bonus, the PAC801W also functions as a dehumidifier, though it only removes half as much moisture as some models and occasionally needs to be drained. Koldfront includes a three-year limited warranty on this 8,000-Btu unit.

Light-duty cooling for small rooms. At 8,000 Btu, the Koldfront Ultracool PAC801W is best for small spaces that are 250 square feet or less. Most reviewers say it does a great job cooling bedrooms and offices, and appreciate the 24-hour programmable timer, washable air filter and extra carbon filter. The three-speed fan is one of the quietest in our report, ranging from 43 decibels on low to 49 decibels on high (though some users say the Ultracool still is loud). A number of owners are so satisfied with the Koldfront's performance that they purchase additional units for other parts of their homes.

Ease of use

User-friendly with some caveats. Most owners say installation is pretty straightforward for the Ultracool PAC801W. Sometimes the window kit doesn't completely seal (but a little duct tape fixes this). It includes a self-evaporative system, which automatically disposes of about 45 pints of moisture daily. This is about half of what larger units can manage, and many owners say they also have to empty the reservoir or hook up a drain hose. "When the A/C is run continuously I need to empty drainage about every 24 hours. Not a big deal," says an owner at At 65 pounds, the Ultracool is heavier than other portable air conditioners in this category.

Excellent value. The Koldfront Ultracool PAC801W is the least expensive portable air conditioner in our report -- with its cooling performance and extra features, most owners say it's a great value. The Koldfront's energy rating of 8.5 EER is the lowest in our report, but few say their electric bill goes up significantly, and the programmable timer helps manage utility costs. Koldfront, who is partnered with EdgeStar, includes a one-year warranty for all parts and labor and a three-year warranty for the compressor. Owners are responsible for round-trip shipping costs after 90 days.
