The Whynter SNO ARC-13W is a powerful 13,000-BTU portable air conditioner in a very small package. With a lower-profile design than most portable ACs, this unit can be placed much less conspicuously -- though most owners report finding it attractive enough for open display. While the ARC-13W is relatively heavy, an attached strap and casters make it fairly easy to move around. Most owners say it cools appropriate spaces well (up to 400 square feet), but not all agree. This portable air conditioner has an auto-evaporative system, but some reports indicate that it struggles at times to keep up with the unit's condensate. Relatively quiet operation is a plus. If your space is just a little smaller, the NewAir AC-12000E (*Est. $430) gets relatively solid feedback, can cool a room of up to 350 square feet and costs less.

The big issue is that the unit's auto-evaporative system doesn't work well in a humid climate, so sometimes the air conditioner's condensate bucket fills during the night, which shuts off the unit.
