Bottom Line

The Callpod Chargepod works as both a portable and a desktop charger. It folds neatly into a travel pouch and is a cinch to set up wherever there is access to AC power. Conversely, by serving as a central power hub for up to six devices, it keeps desktops neat and free of clutter. Some reviewers balk at the price, but all find something to like about this device. Multiple adapter tips covering a wide range of devices are available.

Ease Of Use

Simplicity is a hallmark. An included USB/mini USB cable attaches to one of the adapter tips, and then the cable connects to the Callpod Chargepod. A blue light indicates an activated connection as the device begins charging. The AC connection has a green indicator light that confirms power is going into the Chargepod and that it is ready to go. Experts like its dual role, but they especially value its portability.

Design

Well-built and nice to look at. "Both the base station and cables are well made and fulfill their function," says a reviewer at The-Gadgeteer.com. Blue indicator lights enhance its appealing silver and blue-accented design. Surprisingly small, it weighs about an ounce. The device ships with the Chargepod base, one adapter tip, a USB/mini USB cable, a travel pouch, the AC power adapter and a voucher for additional free tips. Extra adapter tips are otherwise available singly or in various bundled packs.

Performance

Contains clutter and charges quickly. "The Callpod Chargepod performed very well in our tests," says HiTechLegion.com's George Cella-Cella. Another expert says it works "like a charm." Tidiness is another mission of the Chargepod, and DigitalTrends.com reviewer Jason Tomczak notes that, "it dramatically cuts down on charging cable clutter." All the experts report excellent performance with any adapter they used. Cella-Cella says, "As a universal charger, the Callpod Chargepod is an excellent choice," a common sentiment among our sources.

1. CNET

Review Credibility: Very Good One of Kent German's biggest complaints is that the Chargepod ships with only a single device, adapter and purchasers have to buy additional ones. His review is dated, but CNET reviews are important, and nothing about the Chargepod has changed. He ranks it "excellent," likes its simple design and says it "does its job well, but the convenience comes at a high price."

Review Credibility: Good Jason Tomczak says the Chargepod is "a great little accessory," eliminating messy clutter and saving space. It's a little expensive, he admits. However, "the real value becomes evident when you are able to charge all your devices from one single location."

4. About.com

Review Credibility: Good "The power unit is bulky," says former About.com guide Greig Waddell, adding that he wishes that the Chargepod came with a laptop charging connection. He likes its light weight and portability and, unlike some other reviewers, says the device is "budget-friendly."

6. MacLife.com

Review Credibility: Fair Roman Loyola's "bottom line" is representative of what most other experts have to say about the Chargepod. "Road Warriors and supergeeks … will find the Chargepod handy," he says, "The price tag will make everyone think twice."

7. The Gadgeteer.com

Review Credibility: Fair "The folks at Callpod have done a good job engineering a charging system for the tech-carrying road warrior," concludes Dave Rees. He appreciates the fact that it takes up so little space in its travel pouch and that it is made with "quality construction and materials." The AC adapter is "huge by today's standards" though, and he thinks the Chargepod is overpriced.

8. Futurelooks.com

Review Credibility: Fair Its "good build quality and design" and heptagonal design are some of the reasons Michael Kwan gives the Chargepod an 8.5 out of 10 rating. He cautions that no 12V car adapter ships with the device and it's "slightly pricier than it should be."

9. BerryReview.com

Review Credibility: Fair There is "no need to have a wall full of plugs," says a BerryReview.com reviewer named "Summer." The primary benefit of this review is Summer's unusual observation that she "can't put the charger on a nightstand as all the blue LEDs are really bright."
