Reviews say the Optoma EP719 produces a sharp display if you are willing to sacrifice some features found in more expensive portable digital projectors. The Optoma EP719 has 1024 x 768 resolution, better than the 800 x 600 pixels you'll find in cheaper projectors like the Epson PowerLite S4 (*est. $600), so the Optoma is a better choice for displaying spreadsheets or large charts. Reviews say the Optoma EP719 displays text and graphics very well and video decently, although not home-theater quality. But reviews say there isn't much flexibility in room placement, the remote control is very basic, there's no laser pointer, a lot of plastic parts and just a one-year warranty (90 days on the lamp).

ProjectorCentral.com not only offers a thorough review by a projector expert, it also publishes nearly 60 owner reviews, more than twice as many as you'll find at Amazon.com. PC World and Laptop magazine have reviews that aren't written by projector specialists, but their opinions are supported by solid testing.

Our Sources

1. ProjectorCentral.com

This review calls the Optoma EP719 a "bargain" with high resolution for the money, little fan noise and small enough to fit in carry-on luggage. But the "1.10:1 zoom range does not allow for much flexibility in placement" and the video is not very crisp. There are also about 60 user reviews posted here.

2. PC World

PC World reviews fewer than two dozen projectors at this writing and rates the Optoma EP719 merely "good." It says the price, portability and brightness are fine, but the text and graphics display is just average and the one-year warranty is "skimpy."

3. Laptop Magazine

This archived review gives an Editors' Choice award to the Optoma EP719, saying that in testing, brightness wasn't quite as good as advertised but still excellent and contrast was "by far the best we have measured."

4. Amazon.com

About two dozen owner reviews give a good average score to the Optoma EP719, with just a few negative ratings. Among the complaints are too many plastic parts.
