The 15,000-watt Generac 5734, which surges to 22,500 watts, can power even an all-electric home. As part of Generac's GP series, it has earned a Good Housekeeping Seal and a two-year, refund-or-replace warranty from Good Housekeeping (in addition to its Generac two-year warranty). Auto idle adjusts the engine to one of four speeds according to the load, minimizing noise and fuel consumption. The Generac 5734 has eight AC outlets and a 12-volt DC outlet. If you don't need this much wattage, the 6,200-watt Briggs & Stratton 30242 (*Est. $1,000) is recommended by experts.

Editors of ElectricGeneratorsDirect.com recommend the Generac 5734 as one of the three best portable generators in its size range; users also rate and review the generator at this site. An owner's review at Northern Tool and Equipment is very positive as well.
