Stuck pixels every time., November 18, 2009

That's my opinion anyhow. I got my first Archos it had a stuck pixel that couldn't be fixed with the programs and pushing/tapping on the screen etc. Sent it back. Nearly 4 weeks go by (meanwhile their website said it was still being processed the same day I actually got it back so they don't update that either) and I get it back, another stuck pixel. I'm demanding a refund and getting a different brand. Stay the heck away if you're smart and haven't bought one yet.

Don't expect customer service when unit fails (and it will), November 17, 2009

Archos makes great looking products with a lot of features. Their big problem is customer support. From a corporate level they have known bugs that cause the device to reset but they are very slow to fix them. Since they are a French company they contract out their customer support for the US. The company they contract to is very slow to respond and typically really doesn't fix the problem. If you have to send the item in for warranty service expect to wait months for a resolution. It isn't me that has had these problems, look around the web and the Archos fan forum and you will see that it is typical. This is too expensive a product to get bad customer service.

Good product, November 11, 2009

Hi, I received my archos defectuous, it was really embarrasing. I was about to send it back to the customer service one week after I received it and it has finally start correctly.(luck) Actually when it does work the archos 5 is very handy. The screen quality is very good. Nevertheless, the archos 5 can no longer read every video on the web because most of the website upgraded to adobe flash 10 and archos just read the 9th version. If your university use WPA-EPA wifi encodage, then you will not be able to connect yourself to the web... The accessories you can buy allow your archos to become very multifunctional.

CHANNEL GUIDE SERVICE DISCONTINUED, November 11, 2009

Archos advertises DVR support for the Archos 5 device among other functionality. If all the claimed functionality had actually been present, this device would have been an outstanding buy. Unfortunately, Archos no longer offers channel guide support in North America which really diminishes the value of this particular device. I had been going back and forth wtih Archos support for a couple of months now and have been told all this time that the channel guide was down and that they were working to restore that service. The following is a reply that I received from Archos support about two months ago: "I'm very sorry but the TV program guide is currently down. We are working to get it back up as soon as possible." Just today they finally admitted that the channel guide service had been discontinued outright in North America. Again, directly from Archos support: "I'm very sorry but the TV program guide has been discontinued in North America. If you have a subscription that you have paid for, please give us a call at XXX-XXX-XXXX and we will issue you a refund for it." My experience with this device specifically and with Archos in general has been bitterly disappointing.

1. CNET

CNET's Donald Bell likes the Archos 5, especially its video playback capacity, which he calls "stunning." However, he admits that the interface and accessories can't match those of the iPod Touch. Web browsing and Flash functionality are also disappointing in a model touted by Archos as an "Internet Media Tablet."

2. PCMag.com

PCMag.com's review of the Archos 5 has few complaints. It praises the unit for its improved design over earlier Archos models, as well as its video capabilities. Tim Gideon finds that the interface is improved, though it's not quite as seamless and intuitive as the iPod Touch. The rather high price is cited as a drawback.

3. TrustedReviews.com

U.K. site TrustedReviews.com reports on a few portable media players, but they are lumped in with MP3 players. In this review, Stuart Andrews calls the Archos 5 "very nearly a great product." Video and audio are very good, but the interface, buggy software and extra cost of add-ons, when taken together, keep him from recommending the Archos 5 wholeheartedly.

4. TestFreaks.com

TestFreaks.com compiles reviews from users and professional review sites, and it ranks products within brands and categories. MP3 players are lumped in with PMPs, although many PMPs get the highest score possible. The Archos 5 gets an 8.6 out of 10, behind the iPod Touch and Cowon S9. Its big screen and capacity are seen as advantages, while its bulkiness and proprietary USB connection are considered disadvantages.

5. InfosyncWorld.com

InfoSyncWorld.com covers all sorts of portable devices, but relatively few portable media players. The most recent review is the Archos 5. Overall, the Archos 5 is very good, with excellent video capacity. InfoSyncWorld picks up on some downsides other reviewers don't mention, such as the Archos 5's lack of a power adapter, and a low maximum sound volume.

6. PC Advisor

British magazine PC Advisor covers a handful of portable media players. Ginny Mies's look at the Archos 5 echoes the pluses and minuses cited in many reviews: It has stunning video and audio playback and looks great. But to get full functionality, you'll have to pay extra on top of an already-rather high price tag. Internet connectivity is also seen as unsatisfactory.

7. Amazon.com

Nearly 100 user reviews are available on Amazon regarding the Archos 5. About one-third give the unit five stars out of five, and another third give it four stars. Those who give it fewer than four stars cite software issues, compatibility and customer service as contributing to their dissatisfaction.
