by David Rosengarten
Rosengarten, a self-proclaimed "potato chip maniac," is mad for Cape Cod Russet Potato Chips, which he describes (in his inimitable style) as "noisily shatterable, bubbly-textured, and super-crunchy."… Rusty's Hand Made Potato Chips are "huge, and offer some stiff resistance to your teeth." They taste of "fresh, almost raw" potatoes. Rosengarten also love the "browned-potato" flavor and "fried-in-oil" feel of Kettle brand Lightly Salted Chips. Foodies are fans of this entertaining website, which includes taste tests covering soup to nuts. You can sign up for a free e-zine on the website.
by Editors of AOL Food
Editors sampled nearly 60 kinds of plain potato chips and rated them on "crunch, salt and grease levels, flavor, and overall appeal." They list the top 15 chip brands; of the top five, two are from… Shearer's (one of which is a reduced-fat chip). The top chip is Poore Brother's 40% Reduced Fat Kettle. They tasted "like potatoes, not grease," said panelists. Kettle brand Lightly Salted Chips are judged "nicely balanced" and "very appealing." Rusty's Island Chips earn plaudits from editors for their crunchiness and deep potato flavor.
by Editors of AOL Food
Editors tested 100 bags of chips in five flavor categories. Better Made Red Hot wins the barbecue category, while Dirty earns top marks in the salt and vinegar category. Madhouse Munchies takes the prize in… the sour cream category. Kettle brand Death Valley Chipotle Chips boast great "depth of flavor," with a "curry-like top note" and plenty of "fiery deliciousness," editors say. In the "wild flavors" category, editors crown Kettle brand Buffalo Bleu Chips and Zapp's Cajun Dill Gator-Tators.
by Kim Severson
Kim Severson reports that editors of the Dining section spent three days testing potato chips. Their favorites include Kettle brand Lightly Salted Chips, Cape Cod Old Fashioned Kettle Cooked, Lay's Kettle… Cooked Original and Wise All-Natural. She does not discuss chips the panel disliked. Severson also interviews Jim Leff, the founder of Chowhound.com, who picks the Original Maui Kitch'n Cook'd potato chips.
by Penn Jillette
Magician Penn Jillette taste-tested 62 bags of potato chips and selected brands Better Made, Route 11 and Deep River. Jillette likes chips that split the difference between soggy and crisp, so you can "fit… a lot in your mouth at once." The Route 11 Mama Zuma's Revenge are "so hot" that they will "kill you." He also likes the company's sweet potato chips. Deep River's Rosemary & Olive Oil have the "clean taste of rosemary and the new-grease feel of olive oil."
by Editors of Real Simple
Editors recommend chips in categories such as "Best to Eat with a Burger," "Best to Eat with a Beer," "Best to Eat on Their Own" and "Best Unflavored." Editors favor smaller brands, such as Route 11, Solea,… Mystic and Barbara's. Kettle brand Spicy Thai Chips get the nod as best for eating without accompaniment. Ruffles is the only mainstream brand that gets a mention; editors are partial to the company's Natural Reduced-Fat Sea Salted chips. We're not sure what the testing criteria were or how many editors participated in testing. Rusty's earns praise for its "hefty crunch," while Cape Cod Robust Russets are "impossible to resist."

by Editors of The Nibble
Editors select their top five flavored potato chips, but their credentials are not discussed, and we're not sure how many chips varieties they tasted. They say Kettle brand Spicy Thai Chips are a… "delightful mixture of sweet and spicy." Editors suggest layering them in a vanilla parfait - a bizarre suggestion indeed. William Poll Rosemary Thins are said to look elegant on a platter. Some of the brands rated, like North Fork Sweet Potato and Jack and Ollie's Gorgonzola Red Onion, are very difficult to find.
by Ben Wasserstein
Eight types of chip were blind-taste-tested and rated on "gustatory pleasure alone." Tasters found Kettle brand Lightly Salted Chips greasy, with an "offensive and burnt aftertaste." Kettle brand Lightly… Sea-Salted Chips Using Organically Grown Potatoes earned the top spot, however. Lay's Kettle-Cooked Original Potato Chips were the runners-up. Cape Cod potato chips rounded out the top three. This article is dated, and the chip producers may have changed their recipes since its publication.
by Contributors to Amazon.com
At Amazon.com, customers can post reviews of the products they've purchased. Unfortunately, some reviews have more to do with Amazon.com's customer service than the product under review, and many chips have… only a few reviews. Madhouse Munchies Sea Salted and Salt 'n' Vinegar potato chips earn high marks, as do low-fat chips Popchips Original Potato Chips and Kettle Bakes Lightly Salted. Among chips garnering five or more reviews, Kettle brand Lightly Salted Chips earn a high average rating. Customers say that they're full of flavor, and not too salty.
by Contributors to Taquitos.net
Editors of Taquitos.net evaluate hundreds of varieties of snacks. They accept free samples but claim that this does not influence their reviews. Reviews tend to be brief, and prices are not given. The site… does not allow consumers to post comments. Editors say that each chip is tasted by a "certified snack food evaluator," but we have no idea what this means. This site is definitely worth a visit, if only for its fun-to-read top-10 lists.
