The Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test (*Est. $18 for three-test kit) lets women know their results with the words pregnant or not pregnant instead of with pink or blue lines of dye. The downside is that Clearblue Easy Digital, with a sensitivity of 25 mIU/ml of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), is not as sensitive as some nondigital pregnancy tests nor the First Response Gold Digital pregnancy test (*Est. $16 for two-test kit). Authors of a study published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association calculate that the test would be able to detect 80 percent of pregnancies in their study on the first day of a missed period. Clearblue Easy Digital is found to be the most consistently sensitive and easy to read in a 2008 study published in Current Medical Research and Opinion, though these results need to be taken with a grain of salt as the study was funded by Swiss Precision Diagnostics, the manufacturer of Clearblue Easy. Clearblue Easy Digital is marketed as easier to read and interpret, but some users report getting a malfunction reading. In addition if the battery in the test is dead or if the test was not assembled correctly it can't be used. Clearblue Easy Digital may appeal to some women if they have difficult reading lines of dye in traditional tests, but the increased cost does not offer increased accuracy.

A scientific review of the Clearblue Easy Digital is available in Current Medical Research and Opinion and general data on how tested sensitivities translate to pregnancy detection rates is in an article in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. User reviews at Epinions.com give a good overall review of this digital pregnancy test.

Our Sources

1. Current Medical Research and Opinion

This clinical study funded by Clearblue's manufacturer compares the Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test with five other over-the-counter nondigital pregnancy tests. Researchers test not only the sensitivity of each of the home pregnancy tests (HPTs), but also the level of certainty, as reported by the reader of the test, of the results. The Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test is the only test to detect 100 percent of the samples with 25 mIU/ml of hCG and all of the test readers were confident in the results as they only had to read the words pregnant or not pregnant on the display. The major flaws with this study are that the Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test is not compared to any other digital readout HPTs, and that all three authors of the Swiss Precision Diagnostics-funded study are employees of the company.

2. Viewpoints.com

Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test earns a rating of 4.58 stars out of a possible 5 with more than 90 reviews. Pros listed for this test include its accuracy, ease of use and readability. The high cost of this test is the most common complaint among consumers posting here, while a handful report false negatives when testing early, though this may be due more to natural variability in the time of implantation than to faulty tests.

3. Epinions.com

Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test earns 3.5 stars out of a possible 5 with six user reviews. While some users find Clearblue Easy Digital easier to interpret and worth the money, others find the test complicated and not as easy to interpret due to error messages. The test creates the digital readings by using a chroma meter to read the dye lines, and the user is told to ignore the blue lines that appear on the test strip. However some users are confused by this system and try to interpret the blue lines as they would on a nondigital pregnancy test, making the test more complicated than necessary.
