February 2009. J.D. Power and Associates polled more than 3,000 users about their prepaid wireless plans, and PC Magazine solicited feedback from nearly 20,000 of its readers about prepaid wireless cell service. Rounding out our list of reviews is PrepaidReviews.com, which ranks prepaid wireless plans and also includes numerous comments from subscribers. While Consumer Reports polls about 52,000 magazine subscribers about prepaid wireless, it only covers national carriers.

In customer surveys, Virgin Mobile receives the highest overall scores for prepaid wireless customer service, pricing, plans and account management. Subscribers give Virgin Mobile high ratings for call quality, even though its calls use the oft-criticized Sprint Nextel network. Some professional reviewers say Virgin Mobile's prepaid calling plans are confusing, and its website can be hard to navigate. Customers also give Virgin Mobile low scores for the quality of its phones. Monthly plans start at $20 per month with no contract, and you get some free nights and weekend minutes. You can also choose to pay per minute. Overall, reviewers say Virgin Mobile is best if you plan to talk more than 300 minutes per month, since the $25-and-up plans give you some free weekend airtime. If you only want occasional use, then reviewers recommend T-Mobile To Go (starting at $10 for 30 minutes).

In this survey of more than 3,000 prepaid wireless cell-phone users, Virgin Mobile is in a three-way tie for second place in overall customer satisfaction alongside competitors Cricket Wireless and TracFone. It garners a top score for customer service and ties for second place in five out of seven rating categories.

In this 21st annual survey of readers, Virgin Mobile tops the list of prepaid wireless service providers earning especially good scores for its reasonable fees, plan options, customer service and account management, but low marks for its choice of handsets.

Although editors at PrepaidReviews.com give Virgin Mobile four out of five stars, users aren't as enthusiastic, especially about customer service. The editors say Virgin Mobile's prepaid wireless plans are confusing, and its website "can be hard to navigate and understand if you're over the age of 20."

Amazon.com has about a dozen user reviews of Virgin Mobile's prepaid wireless services, resulting in an average rating of 3.5 out of five. Those who give Virgin Mobile just one star consistently complain about service and reception issues.
