The Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II is the company's most expensive inkjet photo printer. Succeeding the Pro9500, it sports an upgraded driver but has the same printheads. Ten pigment ink cartridges produce stunning color and black-and-white photos, but experts point out that the price is only worth it for serious photographers. The less expensive Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II uses eight dye-based inks, and experts say its great color image quality (black-and-whites aren't quite as good as the Pro9500's) will satisfy most users. Some recommend Epson photo printers, such as the Epson Stylus Photo R1900 (*Est. $300), for producing comparably professional-looking prints for a significantly lower initial investment. Unlike a lot of photo-centric printers, the Canon Pixma Pro9500 series fares well in printing text (as small as five points). But if text is your major concern, reviews say you could buy a cheaper, general-use printer such as the Canon Pixma iP4820 (*Est. $80). Reviews say the Pro9500 Mark II's ink usage is relatively economical, but the printer is very slow (an 8-by-10 takes more than four minutes to print), though it improves on the Pro9500.
We found comprehensive looks at the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II at PrinterInfo.com and PrinterComparison.com. British sites PC Advisor and Macworld also have useful comparative reviews, though they're not as thorough and focus on software issues over print quality. Shutterbug has a brief notice about the Mark II in a round-up of award-winning photographic equipment. Amazon.com has a fair amount of user reviews, and most give the Pro9500 Mark II the top rating.

1. PrinterInfo.com
PrinterInfo.com provides a thorough look at the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II, which is the first printer on the site's 10-best list. Reviewer Richard Baguley says it's a "serious" printer that's also "seriously expensive." Even the set of 10 inks is pricey, Baguley notes. The Pro9500 Mark II is praised here for a wide color gamut and very deep blacks, but Baguley also points out that color accuracy is a bit off, and the pigment-based inks don't always play well with glossy paper.

2. PrinterComparison.com
David Rasnake reviews the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II for PrinterComparison.com. He finds image quality excellent, especially for monochrome prints, and notes that the printer is quiet, too. However, he finds that print speeds are slower than on the original Pro9500, and the Mark II still faces stiff competition from the much-cheaper Epson Stylus Photo R1900. Photos of the Mark II in various angles and configurations, as well as a video, round out this review.

3. PC Advisor (UK)
Neil Bennett's look at the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II compares it with the original Pro9500, as well as the competing HP Photosmart Pro B9180. Bennett says the Pro9500 Mark II's 16-bit output beats that of the B9180, but the Canon is more expensive, has some software quirks and is otherwise not a huge improvement on its predecessor.

4. Macworld (U.K.)
This brief review of the Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II is part of a round-up of photo inkjet printers. The Pro9500 Mark II is in a three-way tie for second place with the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 and the HP Photosmart Pro B8550. The HP Photosmart Pro B9180 comes in first. Reviewer Karl Hodge focuses mostly on how the Pro9500 Mark II's drivers and plug-ins work in Mac OS X, though he does praise the Mark II's range and points out its lackluster speed.

Shutterbug magazine, the American representative of the Technical Image Press Association, presents a roundup of TIPA's best photographic equipment of the year.
