At just $30, the HP Deskjet 1000 is one of the cheapest printers you can buy -- but it still prints text, graphics and photos well enough to earn recommendations from a couple of top expert sources. Owners also largely praise this simple printer, although some say it breaks quickly or runs out of ink too fast. You'll pay $35 to replace the Deskjet 1000's two ink cartridges -- more than the cost of a new Deskjet 1000 with the ink cartridges included, making this in effect a disposable printer. You'll have to supply your own USB cable to connect the printer with your computer, because HP doesn't include one in the box. The Deskjet 1000 isn't fast (about two and a half pages per minute in normal mode), and its photos are lower quality than the ones you'll get from the Canon Pixma iP4820 (*Est. $80), reviews say. Still, if you're on a tight budget and you only want to print the occasional document or snapshot, the HP Deskjet 1000 is worth a look.
PrinterInfo.com conducts the most thorough test of the HP Deskjet 1000, evaluating all aspects of the printer and comparing it directly with similar models from HP, Epson and Canon. The U.K.'s TrustedReviews.com also publishes a full, test-based review, and ComputerActive.com (another British publication) publishes a shorter review by the same author. We found plenty of user reviews at Amazon.com and Walmart.com.

Everything about the HP Deskjet 1000 is just "acceptable," Richard Baguley says -- photo quality, print speed, everything. But if that's all you need, you can't beat the $30 price. PrinterInfo.com places the Deskjet 1000 on its list of the 10 best printers, but Baguley cautions that it's not for people who want to print a lot, print quickly or print high-quality photos.
