For those that want a truly impressive HDTV, the sheer size and value of the 82-inch Mitsubishi WD-82737 is hard to beat. Extremely accurate colors deliver a good picture overall, but blacks could be deeper. Unlike front projectors -- the only other practical consideration for those looking for very big screen sizes -- performance in well-lit rooms is stellar, and niceties include a tuner and built-in audio system. The 22-inch deep cabinet is imposing, but flat panels in similar screen sizes are rare and not even remotely affordable for most. Like all Mitsubishi RPTVs, the WD-82737 is 3-D-ready, though you'll need a pretty powerful computer and an accessory kit (*Est. $200) to take advantage of the feature. If you could get by with a smaller screen size, the 65-inch Mitsubishi WD-65737 (*Est. $1,500) has an identical performance, and might fit better in many rooms. Other screen sizes include 60 inches and 72 inches.

Reviews of the 82-inch Mitsubishi WD-82737 are rare, but CNET offers a hands-on evaluation of a smaller rear-projection HDTV in the series. User reviews are limited, but we did spot one at Crutchfield.com. There is some discussion of this TV and others in the series at AVSForum.com.

Our Sources

1. CNET

CNET bases its review of the 82-inch Mitsubishi WD-82737 rear-projection TV on its hands-on evaluation of the smaller 65-inch WD-65737, but notes that performance should be very similar. David Katzmaier finds some flaws -- such as blacks that could be deeper -- but adds that the picture quality is very good considering the price.

2. Crutchfield.com

While user reviews for the Mitsubishi WD-82737 aren't plentiful, a little bit of feedback can be found at Crutchfield.com. A visit here is also helpful because the site does a better job than most retailers in explaining features, though some of the stated benefits should be taken with a grain of salt.
