Best rear projection HDTVs
by David Katzmaier and Kevin Miller
Our Assessment

While many of the top TV reviewers seem to have largely abandoned coverage of rear-projection TVs, CNet's electronics editors have done a good job in keeping up with the category. Testing is thorough, and results are reported. Two of the four sets on this list of "best" rear-projection TVs are discontinued, but the others are just-released models. The Samsung HL61A750 is singled out as an Editors' Choice for its outstanding picture quality and bargain price.

DLP TVs Reviews and Prices
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our Assessment

Consumer Guide's RPTV reviews fall short of CNet's in quality, and you won't see any serious bench testing, but the site does provide a nice and appropriately critical consumer's-eye view of how an RPTV works. There's still room for improvement, however, and far too much use of manufacturer-supplied information. Also, many of the sets listed were discontinued long ago, which makes the site a bit frustrating to use.

Return of the 3D DLP
by Chris Chiarella
Our Assessment

In this single-set review, the Samsung HL61A750 projection TV is subjected to an extensive battery of bench and real-world testing. Reviewer Chris Chiarella explains the bench testing in great detail, though some of that might be overkill for many prospective buyers. Viewing tests are described in less detail, but sufficiently to see that Chiarella is impressed. One quibble is that the image is "a touch softer than expected," though things look better with higher-quality source material, such as from a Blu-ray disc player.

Rear Projection Units
by Contributors to AVSForum.com
Our Assessment There's useful first-hand information in these forums about home entertainment equipment. For example, there's a forum dedicated specifically to rear-projection TVs, and models often get their own "official" thread that discusses specifications, features, problems, fixes and more. While this is a good place to investigate a specific model, there are no ratings or formal reviews.

Projection TVs
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our Assessment Like Circuit City, Amazon.com invites owners to rate and review their TVs. A few TVs get even more reviews than at CircuitCity.com, and we like that Amazon.com now posts the number of reviews right on the main navigation page. A combination of the overall rating and number of reviews makes the Samsung HL61A750 jump out through the clutter.
6. BestBuy.com

Projection Televisions
by Contributors to BestBuy.com
Our Assessment This giant consumer electronics retailer also now includes customer reviews at its site. Rear-projection TVs get a decent amount of feedback from users, though Amazon.com and CircuitCity.com have more.

Projection TVs
by Contributors to PriceGrabber.com
Our Assessment PriceGrabber.com is a shopping portal that, like the large retailers listed above, gives visitors a forum where they can post reviews of products that they own. Review quality is variable, but some are reasonably detailed. The biggest negative is that most current RPTVs get fewer reviews than at the large retail sites.

Not Dated
Rear-Projection TVs
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment Consumer Reports provides some general buying advice and accurately assesses the current state of the RPTV marketplace. Unfortunately, you won't find many useful recommendations as to which RPTVs are the best as the ratings have fallen badly out of date, but a few models covered might still be available through some retailers.

Rear Projection TV Reviews
by Contributors to Buzzillions.com
Our Assessment

Buzzillons.com gathers together user reviews posted at a number of small to mid-sized Internet retailers. In theory, this is a great idea as it makes Buzzillions.com a convenient stop to see opinions that might easily be otherwise missed. However, the execution falls short as Buzzillions.com either intentionally or through poor design does not reveal the model number on its main navigation page, only the maker and screen size. That makes it hard to see if a TV is outdated.

10. Epinions.com
As of Aug. 2008
Projection Televisions
by Contributors to Epinions
Our Assessment Epinions offers the same advantages and drawbacks as the owner-written commentary found at BestBuy.com, Amazon.com and Circuit City's website. Its major drawback is that it gets less traffic in this category, so current televisions tend to have very few reviews compared to those sites.
