Best Rear Projection HDTVs
by David Katzmaier
Our Assessment

While many of the top TV reviewers have abandoned coverage of rear-projection TVs, CNET has taken the time to review at least one set in recent months. The 65-inch Mitsubishi WD-65737 is complimented for providing a lot of screen for the money and having decent picture quality. Though only one set is physically tested, David Katzmaier says that other screen sizes in the WD-737 series should perform similarly.

Mitsubishi L65-A90 65-inch LaserVue Rear-projection HDTV
by Michael Trei
Our Assessment

Sound & Vision magazine's Michael Trei says that there's a lot to like about the laser-driven Mitsubishi L65-A90, though a deep cabinet and high price are not among them. Shadow detail is impressive, but black levels are not particularly deep. Color capabilities are described as "dazzling." The bottom line assessment is that the "L65-A90 remains an impressive TV, if a rather expensive one," and the magazine gives it a Certified and Recommended award.

Mitsubishi LaserVue L65-A90: First Tech Review of LASER HDTV
by Gary Merson
Our Assessment Gary Merson, owner and content provider for HDGuru.com, puts the Mitsubishi G65-L90 through an exhaustive and well-documented battery of bench and viewing tests. There are tons of details here, but they might be too esoteric for the casual shopper. His conclusion is that the "L65-A90 has its place among the best HDTVs in the market today."

Our Assessment

There's useful first-hand information in these forums about home-entertainment equipment. For example, there's a forum dedicated to rear-projection TVs, and models often get their own official thread that discusses specifications, features, problems, fixes and more. Mitsubishi owners have established a thread that covers all of the company's 2009 non-laser RPTVs and spans over 2,200 posts to date. The thread on the company's LaserVue RPTVs is even longer, but less helpful because it's mostly non-owners complaining about price.

Our Assessment

Amazon.com invites owners to rate and review their TVs. Mitsubishi's WD-737 series does well here, though there aren't that many reviews posted yet. The only rating of less than four stars (out of a maximum five) involves a dead-on-arrival set and subsequent customer service issues. The Mitsubishi L65-A90 fares poorer at first glance, but a closer look reveals that owners are happy. Most people that complain about price don't own the TV.

Our Assessment BestBuy.com also lets customers post reviews at its site. The WD-737 series of Mitsubishi rear-projection TVs gets even more feedback than at Amazon.com, but other models get none at all. Reviews are on the short side, but each user is asked whether or not they would recommend the TV to a friend.

by Contributors to TigerDirect.com
Our Assessment TigerDirect is another destination for user reviews. Navigation is a little tedious -- the overall rating is shown on the main category page, but you must click through to each product to see how many reviews a rating is based on. The Mitsubishi WD-65737 seems to be a stand out with impressive overall ratings following nearly 25 reports.

Mitsubishi's WD-82837 Home Theater HDTV
by Editors of First Glimpse magazine
Our Assessment Though this article offers high praise for the Mitsubishi WD-82837, there's no indication that testing was performed. Instead, it appears to be based on manufacturer supplied information with a hyperbole thrown in for good measure.

Rear Projection TV Reviews
by Contributors to Buzzillions.com
Our Assessment Buzzillons.com gathers together user reviews posted at a number of small to mid-sized Internet retailers, though BestBuy.com is also included. The listing includes many discontinued models, but some of Mitsubishi's current RPTVs are also represented.
10. Epinions.com

Projection Televisions
by Contributors to Epinions.com
Our Assessment Epinions.com offers the same advantages and drawbacks as the owner-written commentary found at BestBuy.com, Amazon.com and similar sites. It gets little traffic in this category, so current rear-projection televisions have very few reviews -- one or two at the most.
