Critics say that the 56-inch Samsung HL-56A650 deserves consideration for its great picture and great price. Although this TV can't be hung on a wall, neither LCD nor plasma flat panels can deliver a 1080p image that approaches this screen size at so little cost. Blacks are satisfyingly deep, and colors have been described as first-rate. The Samsung HL-56A650 uses a lamp that needs to be replaced periodically -- usually every few years depending on usage. In addition, some users see a rainbow effect -- where multicolored shadow appears around an object.
Professional reviewers have largely abandoned their coverage of rear-projection TVs, but we saw a nice report for the 56-inch Samsung HL-56A650 at ConsumerGuide.com. While the review does not include the results of any bench testing, it does include a good discussion of real-world viewing tests and is appropriately critical. User reviews, though not particularly plentiful at present, indicate how happy owners are after the sale.
