Depends on needs, November 19, 2009

This detector is a great everyday detector for it's ability to remember false signal locations, in more urban settings. The product is good at detecting photo radar and intersection cameras and has the ability to remember falsies, intersection cams, photo radar and speed trap locations with the built in GPS memory function. Bonus-it gets quieter as it learns. It's a great product. I got to experience this when I was recently in Wash and Ore. I chose to go with the Escort Redline instead. It has none of the 9500ix's GPS/memory features and in an urban setting will drive you nuts because it won't shut up. The advantage is for when one drives on freeways/highways away from urban settings. The Redline has Valentine like performance in so far as it can pick up laser and radar from farther distances than the 9500ix. It all depends on what kind of driving one engages in, where one lives and in my case whether or not your area has intersection cameras or photo radar. I live where those devices are not used at this time. In a perfect world one could use the 9500ix in town and the Redline for highway trips. So if you are in an urban setting for most of your driving, have to deal with intersection cams and photo radar the 9500ix is ideal. For me I kick up my driving when I'm outside the city so the Redline suits my driving habits better. Where I drive one goes from an urban setting to a highway setting surrounded by forest in a blink of an eye. So my nemesis is the South Island RCMP Highway Patrol. They hide behind natural barriers, shoot the laser and step out and direct you to pull over. It's always fun to drive by the locations then honk and wave:) I incorporate VEIL and Laser Shields on both my plates and have avoided a couple of tickets with this set up vs laser. The Redline gives the earliest detection, the VEIL and laser shield claim to delay a laser's ability to lock in a speed reading. So the combination allows one to slow down safely at reasonable speeds. Believe it or not police will use laser from behind. The police in my area give a 20kmh/12mph grace before writing you up. So @ 130kmh in a 90kmh zone my combination works perfectly. Of course if you are doing 150 in a 55 zone nothing will help you. The day I do get a ticket by laser with this combination, I'll be investing in a laser jammer. Escort vs Valentine, November 17, 2009

Wow, this thing is great in town. It tells me in advance where all the red light cameras are, including the ones we wait in que to get on the freeway. If you have an Escort, and it is so sensitive I just let it sit on the console, it marvelous and great. But when you go on a long trip, bring the Valentine. Its long range detection is unsurpassed. One time one guy stayed on my blind spot for 15 minutes while I was doing from 170mph down to a gentle 65..., I havd the Valentine, he had to give up. Conclusion is I wish you have enough money to own both. (Two tickets $271 each now in CA) and two points, I would skim on my meals so that I can have both detectors. I did not say one is better than the other, they are just different. Good Luck.

New feature...no longer need a power source to update, November 7, 2009

As of around 11/1/09 the 9500ix now is powered through the USB cable for updating, no more 12V adapters needed. I bought mine directly from Escort, had it 3 weeks and found out about the change no longer needing a 12V adapter. Since I was within my 30 days they exchanged it. Makes life easier. I am enjoying this detector, rugged learns false signals. I don't like the curly wire that plugs into the 12V socket. I will get a straight wire and hard wire it into the fuse box. Also, barely worth mentioning but the case it came in is beautiful but useless, too big. I would rather have a small soft case.

I found a potential problme, October 27, 2009

The one that I ordered from Amazon is still on its way to my house. I saw a display at Fry's today, and here is what I concern about. The wire jack is just a tel phone jack, with a small and fragial plastic clip on it which is very easy break. Once you put the unit on and take it off constantly ( to avoid being stolen), you may break the clip Jack, and if you hard wire interally, then you have to replace all the wires too. Why Escort did not use the same type of plug in, as the same one used on laptops today? I saw other brands are using laptop type plug in, all sealed jack and connectors. This is what Escort missed or did wrong. I will see if i can just put a base ball cap on the unit over the dashborad to hide it so I do not have to take it off and put it on all the time.

3. RadarTest.com

Reviewer Craig Peterson says he doesn't consider this a true comparison, because one of the competitors -- the custom-installed Escort Passport 9500ci -- costs nearly four times more than the others. But he praises it and the windshield-mounted Escort Passport 9500ix more than other GPS-equipped radar detectors, including the Beltronics GX 65, Cobra XRS R9G and Cobra XRS 9950.

The Escort Passport 9500ix is one of "the most advanced windshield radar detectors currently being produced" because it includes a GPS database of speed and red-light cameras, but there is no full review of this model.
