Induction cooktops run on electricity, but they heat cookware by using a magnetic field rather than by transferring heat through a burner. This makes them both faster and more responsive than most electric cooktops, and the GE Profile PHB925SPSS is a perfect example. It is a top performer in two recent professional tests with excellent results across the board: baking, boiling, broiling and simmering. Users say that the cooktop elements are just as responsive as gas burners, and they are astonished at how quickly it boils water. This range comes with a variety of features, including a 5.3-cubic-foot convection oven, a warming drawer and a temperature probe for meats. Users have few complaints about this range except for its high price tag (which most say is worth it) and the fact that the control panel can be hard to read. If you can't afford to pay more than $2,000 for an induction range, the Samsung FE-R300SX (*Est. $625) is a basic electric range that gets very good reviews from both professionals and owners.

The GE Profile PHB925SPSS is included in the latest tests of electric ranges at ConsumerReports.org, and it is also a top pick in Good Housekeeping's 2011 roundup of 27 gas, electric, dual-fuel and induction ranges. Both tests evaluate ranges on a wide variety of cooking tasks, including boiling, baking, broiling and simmering. We found about 20 reviews from users scattered across four retail sites: Sears.com, AJMadison.com, Amazon.com and HomeDepot.com.
