Range or cooktop/wall oven?

The freestanding ranges featured in this report have finished sides and supporting legs. You might want to consider a costlier drop-in or slide-in model, which is well suited for a kitchen island but requires special installation. We haven't seen many reviews of these types of ranges, but performance should be similar to the corresponding freestanding range.

Technology site CNET has an informative buyer's guide for ranges, complete with information on the types of ranges available and important features to look for.

ConsumerReports.org also has a helpful buyer's guide, covering types, features and major brands. However, you'll have to be a subscriber to see range ratings and recommendations.

Abby's Guide is a good series of articles on how to buy a range or kitchen stove. There are articles to help you decide between gas and electric ranges, as well as between cooktops/wall ovens and ranges. Styles of cooking and feature sets are also discussed.

SeriousEats.com, a website about food and cooking, has an interesting forum post about the advantages of gas versus electric cooktops. More than 40 users respond, with nearly all of these serious cooks recommending gas cooktops for their precision and ability to cook during a power outage.

The Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings, written by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, has a detailed look at how to purchase the most efficient cooking range appliances.
