Bottom line

The 6.2-cubic-foot Whirlpool WFE540H0A is a freestanding, smooth-top range that heats quickly and maintains even, consistent temperatures in the convection oven. It also has a self-cleaning mode but owners say it doesn't work very well. The range is available in black, black ice, white and white ice. A stainless-steel option is available for about $50 more.

Excels at all cooking functions. The Whirlpool WFE540H0A gets excellent performance ratings from owners who say it does everything well -- from consistent temperatures and even heat in the convection oven to quick heating on the stovetop. The convection features are singled out as being especially convenient, with reviewers saying they save time in the kitchen. Even those who live at higher altitudes say everything they bake turns out perfectly.

Lots of space and a window big enough to see it all. Users are especially appreciative of the extra-large 6.2-cubic-foot capacity of the Whirlpool WFE540H0A -- the largest residential single oven in the industry, according to Whirlpool. One user at HomeDepot.com says it has "… enough room to cook anything I want to!" In addition to its large capacity, the WFE540H0A has seven rack guides and a maximum capacity recessed rack that allows users to cook a large item on the bottom -- like a turkey -- and a smaller dish on the top. It also comes with a storage drawer, but most reviewers say it's severely undersized. It's also hard to open and close because there's no track to align it on.

The most important convenience features. The Whirlpool WFE540H0A has five burners -- one of which is a six-inch warm zone that keeps prepared dishes warm while the remainder of the meal is cooking. There are also dual radiant elements that can be adjusted to fit either small or large pots. In the oven there is a hidden baking element that makes for easy cleanup. The range is equipped with a steam-cleaning mode, but reviewers say it doesn't work very well and requires additional scrubbing. It has delay bake/delay start, keep warm and Sabbath cooking modes. Other features include a clock, oven light, timer and control lockout.
