The Whirlpool WFG540H0A is an excellent gas range with a lot of convenient features for its budget-friendly price tag. It's also one of the largest gas-powered single-oven ranges on the market. Its stovetop performs very well in expert tests, both in low- and- high-powered challenges, and users agree that it does a great job. In that same test, it struggles to maintain consistent oven temperatures, but most owners don't seem to have any issues.
Powerful burners. The Whirlpool WFG540H0A aces stovetop cooking tests. Experts at Reviewed.com say it's "one of the best gas stovetops on the market." The two front high-powered burners "blasted through speed tests," bringing water to a boil in just five minutes. The low-powered burners also did an excellent job cooking at low temperatures -- simmering and melting food without scorching it.
Like most gas ranges, the WFG540H0A didn't fare as well in oven tests. Testers say it took a long time to preheat and, once it did, the temperatures didn't stay consistent. The convection setting didn't make much of a difference. Still, most users are pleased with the range. More than 600 owners at HomeDepot.com, Sears.com and AJMadison.com give the Whirlpool range a combined overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Most agree it's a very good value overall.
Large oven, small storage drawer. At 5.8 cubic feet, the Whirlpool WFG540H0A is one of the largest gas-powered single-oven ranges available. It has more than enough room to bake very large items, large quantities and even multiple dishes at the same time. Furthermore, it has seven rack guides that allow for great flexibility in positioning. The range comes with two racks, one of which is recessed to allow for more room when baking large items, such as a turkey. The range also has a built-in storage drawer, but most users say that it's really small.
Small on price, big on features. The Whirlpool WFG540H0A is loaded with convenient features, especially considering its bargain price tag. It has five sealed burners, including two power burners that rely on 15,000 and 17,000 British thermal units (Btu) for fast boiling and searing of food. Owners love the full-sized grates that allow them to easily slide pots and pans off the burner. The range also has a hidden bake element for easy cleanup as well as delay-cook, energy-save, simmer and Sabbath modes. It has a steam-cleaning mode as well, but testers say it's not very reliable.
The Whirlpool WFG540H0AS is included in ConsumerReports.org's latest roundup of kitchen ranges. Ranges are rated on how quickly they heat water, as well as their performance at melting, simmering, broiling and baking.
