While the Haier HT21TS77SP doesn't get as much feedback from users as our top-rated Maytag M1TXEGMYW, the reviews it has are more uniformly positive. Like the Maytag, it's roomy, efficient and good at temperature control. Unlike the Maytag, it lets you adjust fridge and freezer temperatures separately. It's a little bit noisy, though, and short on features. Also, it's not widely available: We found only a handful of retailers that sell it.
Covers the basics. The Haier HT21TS77SP refrigerator doesn't come with a lot of features, but it has all the basics: spill-proof glass shelves, clear plastic door bins and humidity-controlled crispers. All the storage is adjustable -- even the single wire shelf in the freezer. The freezer compartment also has a light, a feature the Maytag lacks. Users say there's plenty of room in both fridge and freezer, although the fridge light does obstruct the top shelf a bit. The Haier doesn't come with an ice maker, but one is available as an option.
Holds its temperature. In lab tests, the Haier HT21TS77SP refrigerator doesn't perform quite as well as the Maytag at maintaining an even temperature. However, users generally say that this refrigerator holds its temperature very well; only one reviewer complains that the temperature fluctuates sharply in the freezer. The refrigerator is also highly efficient, meeting not just the Energy Star requirements but also the stricter Tier 2 standard of the Consortium for Energy Efficiency. A few users find the fridge a bit noisy, but most say it's quiet (especially without the optional ice maker). We saw almost no durability complaints, but we don't have any data about the overall reliability of the Haier brand.
Great use of space. Users love the layout of the Haier HT21TS77SP refrigerator. Though it has only 15.4 cubic feet of space in the fresh-food section, it makes the best possible use of that space with features like gallon storage bins in the door and two half-width shelves to accommodate items of varying height. The controls are very simple: one dial located front and center in the refrigerator section, and a second one at the rear of the freezer compartment. The glass shelves have raised edges to contain spills and make cleanup easier.
Not much to look at. In terms of looks, the Haier HT21TS77SP is pretty utilitarian. It comes only in basic white or black. We found conflicting reports about the finish: One review says it's textured on the front but not the sides, while another claims the reverse. The interior of the fridge is a bit more upscale than the exterior, with multiple lights and clear bins so you can see your food at a glance. And at just 31 inches wide and 67 inches high, this refrigerator should fit comfortably into an older kitchen.
