Kenmore Elite 72483 Review
Bottom Line

The Kenmore Elite 72483 is among the most feature-laden refrigerators in this report as well as getting high ratings from experts across the board for its performance. While that is judged as excellent, what really strikes reviewers is the smart looks and well-designed interior. If you don't want stainless steel, the Kenmore 72482 ($3,200) [http://www.sears.com/kenmore-elite-30-cu-ft-4-door-bottom-freezer/p-04672482000P?] is the same fridge, but with a white finish, and the Kenmore 72489 (Est. $3,100) [http://www.sears.com/kenmore-elite-30-cu-ft-4-door-bottom-freezer/p-04672489000P] has a black finish.

Breaking it down

Features

Ice, ice baby. One of the biggest gripes we see about all refrigerators is that the icemaker is super slow and takes forever to replenish itself. The Kenmore Elite 74283 solves that with a setting called "Ultra Ice" that speeds up ice cube production. After it's activated, it remains on for 24 hours then turns itself off -- a great feature if you're having guests or some other event where you think you're going to need more ice in a specific period of time. Other than that, the 74283 has a fairly standard array of features, including a through-the-door ice (both cubes and crushed) and water dispenser. The full-width pull out drawer can be independently set to a temperature that's ideal for meats and seafood, chilled wine, snacks, drinks and deli items. The rest of the features list includes twin crispers, interior controls for temperature and other settings, a door alarm, a control lock function, LED interior lighting, and more.

Performance

Nearly perfect. Matthew Zahnzinger at Reviewed.com struggles to find anything that this French-door fridge does not excel at, saying, "Based on our extensive lab tests, we simply couldn't find anything wrong with the Kenmore Elite 72483." He particularly praises the performance of the "Airtight Crisper" system, saying it lives up to its name. Other experts agree, with one independent testing organization giving the 74283 an Excellent for temperature performance, energy efficiency and noise, and a Very Good for ease of use. Ry Crist at CNET also has almost nothing but raves for the Kenmore 74282 (which is identical to the stainless steel 74283, but in white). He found a bit more variation in temperature over a 72-hour period than in other expert testing, but not enough to concern him. He concludes, "With 21.1 cubic feet of fresh food storage space, a dependable level of performance, and a user-friendly design loaded with helpful features, the 72482 has everything I'd want from a high-end, large French door model, and it costs less than competitors that try (and often fail) to offer the same thing."

Ease of use

Excels in this category. In several experts' opinions, this is where the Kenmore 74283 and its white sibling, the Kenmore 74282, shines. The interior is spacious and versatile, with things like drop-down trays on the doors to allow for either tall items or extra storage as needed, and, as Zahnzinger notes at Reviewed.com, makes this fridge very family-friendly. At CNET, the 74282 aced storage tests that included a casserole dish, a roasting pan, a party platter and an extra-large pizza box, with Crist concluding that, "Capacity is a clear strong suit for the 72482."

Appearance

Comes in three color options. Measuring 35.75 inches wide by 37.75 inches deep, the Kenmore 74283 isn't an ideal choice for a smaller kitchen, but if your kitchen is large enough to house it this French door fridge is an attractive choice. It comes in stainless steel, white and black, and the stainless steel doesn't get panned for being a smudge magnet like some others do. Zahnzinger likes the "sleek" design, although Crist says it's "boxy" and somewhat dated. Several owners, however, say it's the best-looking fridge they've ever owned.

The Kenmore 72483 doesn't have a ton of reviews, probably because it's both a newer model and relatively pricey, but the few we found were very positive. At Sears.com, which is the exclusive retailer for Kenmore appliances, the 72483 earns an overall rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 in just over a dozen reviews. Elsewhere, the white model, the Kenmore 72482 has just one review but a perfect 5-star rating from that happy customer, but the black Kenmore 72489 has a single, 1-star review due to a mechanical issue.
