LG LDC24370ST Review

Bottom Line

A top performer in professional tests and a hit with owners, the LG LDC24370ST offers solid, quiet performance. The refrigerator lacks some niceties, such as through-the-door ice and water dispensers, though an icemaker is built in. It comes in stainless steel, but a version in smooth white is also offered as the LG LDC24370SW ($1,700) [http://www.homedepot.com/p/LG-Electronics-24-cu-ft-Bottom-Freezer-Refrigerator-in-Smooth-White-LDC24370SW/204708363].

Breaking it down

Features

Roomy fridge and freezer. The LG LDC24370ST offers all the space even large families might need. The glass shelving has plenty of adjustment options, and the doors have two large storage bins that can a hold gallon size jugs, a butter compartment and a place to put small items like individual cartons or milk or cheese. There are also two crisper compartments and a full-width pantry bin for storing large party trays, etc. -- a plus for those who entertain a lot. The freezer has a convenient system of sliding drawers for items of various sizes. You won't find any kind of water or ice dispenser, but there is a built-in ice maker, digital temperature controls (interior) and an alarm that sounds if the door is left open too long.

Performance

Keeps its cool. In several professional tests, the LG LDC24370ST refrigerator does a great job of maintaining a constant temperature in both the fridge and the freezer. However, in testing by two different experts, there were some temperature variations in spots, but they were not wide enough to cause concern. This refrigerator is extremely energy efficient for a bottom-freezer and is Energy Star qualified. We saw a couple of owner comments saying that the icemaker can be loud, though most owners consider noise control overall to be excellent and the fridge earns the highest score in that regard in expert reviews.

Ease of use

Freezer is on the bottom. You don't have the convenience of a through the door dispenser for ice or water, but we saw little in the way of complaints regarding overall usability of the LG LDC24370ST. Putting the freezer on the bottom raises the refrigerator compartment -- the part of the fridge that's accessed most often -- to eye level, and that minimizes stooping and reaching. Pull-out-bins in the freezer make organizing frozen foods easier, though some say it's still easy to lose items in the very bottom. Controls are digital, with a digital display of settings, and are located on the front top edge of the refrigerator compartment, where they are easy to reach.

Appearance

Small but sleek. At just under 33-inches wide, the LG LDC24370ST is narrower than most French-door or side-by-side fridges, making it a better fit for many older kitchens. The stainless-steel finish adds a touch of class, but can also be a bit of a finger-print magnet. If you prefer, the same refrigerator is available in smooth white as the LG LDC24370SW, and you'll save about $100 dollars if you go with the white as well.
