The 21-cubic-foot Maytag M1TXEGMYW is a roomy, efficient, top-freezer fridge that gets good results in professional tests. It includes such basic features as adjustable storage and humidity-controlled crispers, and, unlike many top-freezer fridges, it comes in a stainless-steel finish. Its biggest drawback is the single control knob for the fridge and freezer sections; some users can't find the sweet spot between melted ice cream and frozen lettuce. Noise can also be a problem.
Few bells and whistles. The Maytag M1TXEGMYW doesn't include fancy features like digital controls or a water dispenser. However, it does have adjustable, spill-proof glass shelves, adjustable door bins, humidity-controlled crispers and a built-in ice maker. Most owners say the fridge has plenty of space, though some wish there were more options for adjusting the shelves and bins. Another feature users would really like to see added is a light in the freezer. The factory-installed ice maker is a plus for some users, but others complain that it takes up much-needed freezer space.
Temperature control can be tricky. In lab tests, the Maytag M1TXEGMYW does a great job of maintaining an ideal temperature. In real life, however, many users find the Maytag's single temperature-control knob a problem. We saw many complaints that it's always either too cold in the fridge or too warm in the freezer. Users are also divided over the Maytag's noise level; some say it's very quiet, while others find it too loud. One thing users do agree on is that at $750, this is a lot of fridge for the money. We saw few reports of mechanical problems, but the few users who did have trouble say warranty service is a pain.
Easy cleanup. One of the most common compliments we saw in user reviews is how easy the Maytag M1TXEGMYW is to clean. One user at HomeDepot.com says, "The big wide doors make it easy to clean" while another praises the spill-proof glass shelves. We saw a few complaints about the shelves not fitting in place securely and tending to stick. Also, a couple of owners note that the position of the light -- right in the top center of the refrigerator section -- makes it hard to move items around on the top shelf.
Stainless is a nice option. A stainless-steel finish is practically standard on the new French-door refrigerators, but it's rarely available on more compact top-door models. One of the things owners like best about the Maytag M1TXEGMYW refrigerator is that comes in stainless, yet it can still fit comfortably into an older kitchen. However, some users like the white and black finishes too; one user at HomeDepot.com says they have a nice texture that's "not flat or shiny" and makes a nice "added touch to the outside." Another owner says one plus of the fridge's design is its shorter, wider shape, which "allow[s] for decorative storage on top that I can actually reach."
